Abby Johnson Biography and Career:

Abby Johnson was born on 10 July 1980 in New York City. She is a campaigner. She attended Rockdale High School and Sam Houston State University for her further education. She began her career in Bryan at a parenthood clinic. She was often confronted by activists. Additionally, she got death threats for the same offence. However, she was dissatisfied with her employment and quit on 6 October 2009. She remained a volunteer with the coalition for the remainder of her life after quitting her employment. Johnson admitted to having two abortions prior to the birth of her daughter in January 2011. She now resides in Texas with her husband, Doug, and their seven children. Johnson was reared as a Southern Baptist but left the church when her work at Planned Parenthood drew criticism.

She and her husband Doug, who was reared Lutheran, went two years without visiting church before converting to the Episcopal Church, which has one of the most liberal abortion policies of any Mainline Protestant institution. Later in life, she founded And Then There Were None, an anti-abortion ministry (ATTWN). In 2017, a demonstration against Donald Trump was held, and Johnson took part. She spoke out against racism and singled out police officers. The church took issue with her employment at Planned Parenthood, and as a result, she left the church and ceased attending for a period of two years. She also faced various claims after her decision to resign from Planned Parenthood. She was suspected of taking things from the facility and duplicating private data. Johnson’s account of her conversion has been called into doubt by two distinct investigative journalists from the Texas Monthly and The Texas Observer.

According to the Texas Monthly storey, reporter Nate Blakeslee, one day after Johnson claimed to have had an epiphany while watching an ultrasound-guided abortion, she gave a radio interview to a feminist programme in which she expressed enthusiasm for her clinic and criticised the 40 Days for Life protestors. Additionally, Johnson stated to Blakeslee that the woman she witnessed having an abortion was black and thirteen weeks pregnant; however, according to the Induced Abortion Report Forms (which must be filed with the state of Texas), only one woman that day was black; she was in her sixth week of pregnancy, and no patient that day was more than ten weeks.

According to Planned Parenthood, no ultrasound-guided abortions were conducted on the day Johnson said she observed the operation, and the physician at the Bryan clinic indicated that Johnson was never requested to help with an abortion. Johnson said that the gap was the result of Planned Parenthood’s poor recordkeeping and possibly record tampering.

Saul Elbein of the Texas Observer interviewed Johnson and two of her pals for the piece. Johnson’s departure from Planned Parenthood and conversion to anti-abortion activism, according to Laura Kaminczak, a friend since graduate school who worked at a separate Planned Parenthood facility, was “totally opportunistic.” According to Kaminczak, Johnson was reprimanded at work for sending emails containing “inappropriate comments” about their colleagues, for which Johnson was put on a performance improvement plan and Kaminczak was sacked. Additionally, Kaminczak said that Johnson was not angry after seeing the abortion through ultrasound, but rather pleased about it since it seemed to be more merciful than the conventional operation.

Shelly Blair, another of Johnson’s acquaintances, and Kaminczak both indicated that Johnson was experiencing financial difficulties and was contemplating filing for bankruptcy prior to resigning from Planned Parenthood. Kaminczak continued by stating that Johnson revealed in him that Shawn Carney of Coalition for Life had offered her money for speaking engagements in exchange for her conversion. Johnson’s tale began receiving national attention in November 2009, when she was adopted by the anti-abortion movement and likened to Norma McCorvey, the “Jane Roe” of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 United States Supreme Court decision legalising abortion. McCorvey became an anti-abortion activist in 1995.

Johnson started helping with the Coalition for Life shortly after her departure, which routinely prayed outside her old clinic. Johnson has written two novels. Unplanned, published in January 2011, describes her time at Planned Parenthood and her subsequent conversion to abortion resistance; the book served as the foundation for a film that was released in March 2019. The Walls Are Speaking: Former Abortion Clinic Workers Share Their Stories, published in 2016, details the experiences of former abortion clinic workers who have come through her ministry.

Johnson is the founder of the anti-abortion ministry And Then There Were None (ATTWN), which advocates for abortion clinic staff to resign and gives financial assistance and counselling to those who do.
