Adam Gemili Biography and Career:

Adam Gemili was born on the 6th of October, 1993, in the United Kingdom. Gemili’s ancestors are of Moroccan and Iranian heritage. He had his early education at Dartford Grammar School before attending University in east London.

In his previous life as a footballer, Adam Gemili represented Thurrock on loan from Dagenham & Redbridge and had previously been signed by Chelsea as a youngster to play in their junior programme. However, after earning silver at the European Junior Championships in athletics in 2011, he decided to pursue a career in the sport.

A gold medal in the 100 m at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics was awarded to Gemili on July 11, 2012. Gemili ran in 10.05 seconds, breaking the championship record set by Darrel Brown in 2002, to take home the gold medal and win the gold medal in the 100 m. In addition to breaking the British national junior record, Gemili’s 10.05 places him sixth all-time among juniors, behind only Brown, Jeff Demps, Marcus Rowland, D’Angelo Cherry, and Christophe Lemaitre in terms of time.

He finished second behind Asafa Powell in his first heat in the 100 m at the London 2012 Olympics, with a time of 10.11 seconds. As a result of placing in the top three of his heat, Gemili advanced to the next round. However, after coming third in his semi-final with a time of 10.06, he was unable to advance to the championship final.

In the 200 m, he qualified for the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Moscow, which will be held in Moscow. When he qualified for the semi-finals, he ran a time of 19.98, which was the second-fastest time ever by a British athlete over that distance, behind only John Regis. As a result, he qualified for his first major final, where he finished in fifth place with a time of 20.08.

On July 28, 2014, at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Gemili finished second in the Men’s 100 m final with a timing of 10.10 seconds, behind Jamaican Kemar Bailey-Cole, who won the event. His performance of 9.97 seconds in the 100 metres on May 31, 2015, was a personal best and the first time he had broken the 10-second barrier in his career; nevertheless, the wind speed was higher than was allowed by the rules.

On 7 July 2015, at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Birmingham, he became the 100th man in history to legally break the ten-second barrier in the 100 m, clocking 9.97 seconds once more; however, he fell as he crossed the finish line, sustaining a hamstring injury that would prevent him from competing at the 2015 World Championships. He is the one-hundredth person to break the ten-second barrier.

Gemili qualified for the Men’s 200 metre Final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Gemili, Christophe Lemaitre, and Churandy Martina all crossed the finish line at the same time. The picture finish confirmed that Lemaitre had won the bronze medal, with barely six-thousandths of a second separating the first two finishers and the third-place finisher. Gemili earned the Gold Medal in the 4 X 100m relay at the 2017 World Championships in London, where he ran the second leg for the winning team.

Gemili qualified for the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, in both the 100m and 200m individual races, as well as the relay races. During the 100m semi-finals, he was eliminated, and he missed out on qualifying for the final because of a photo finish. He came within inches of winning a medal in the 200m final, after taking the lead going out of the bend but eventually finished fourth. He raced the first leg of the men’s 4 x 100 m relay team, finishing second behind the United States in a time of 37.36 seconds, which set a new European best for the event.

Getting off-topic for a moment, in November 2019, Gemili led a group of 20 British athletes, including Mo Farah, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and Laura Muir, who threatened to take legal action against the British Olympic Association over the interpretation of the International Olympic Committee’s Rule 40, which was contained in guidelines that the association had recently issued.

Regulation 40 prohibits the use of Olympic-related terminology in marketing by non-approved sponsors; the athletes maintained that the BOA’s interpretation of the rule was too restrictive in terms of how they might promote their individual sponsors on the international stage.

At the end of March 2020, athletes and the BOA struck an agreement that would provide athletes with greater chances to showcase their sponsors during the Games, as well as immediately before and after the Games. In July 2020, Gemili was named to the board of directors of the Athletics Association, the athletes’ organisation for track and field competitors.

In 2020, he will join the board of directors of the Athletics Association, a new autonomous organisation. Adam Gemili won the men’s 200m in the Diamond League in Stockholm in August 2020 with a time of 20.61 seconds, setting a new world record. Adam Gemili’s dreams of winning a medal in the Tokyo Olympics, which were previously slated for 2020 but will now take place in 2021, were destroyed when he pulled up hurt during the heats of the 200m.
