Once Adam Silver finished law school, he clerked for the Honorable Kimba Wood of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, where he received valuable expertise in the legal sector. After that, in 1992, Silver began his career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) after working as a litigation associate at the New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Adam Silver was named one of the 100 most influential persons in the world by TIME and CNN before becoming NBA commissioner in 2014. The Sporting News also recognized him as one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Sports” on many occasions before he was promoted to his current post. Once David Stern’s deputy, Adam Silver took over as NBA commissioner on February 1, 2014.

Three months later, when Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was discovered on film using racial slurs, Adam Silver was thrust into the center of his first crisis. The Clippers faced up against the Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. Silver took swift and firm action, kicking Sterling out of the league for good and subsequently relieving him of his own position in the organization. To add insult to injury, Sterling was fined $2 million. Many people were pleased to see that Adam Silver is not like David Stern, who frequently ignored the wrong behavior of his owners when it concerned the Sterling issue.

During his time as commissioner, the league’s financial and geographic reach continued to grow, especially in China. Silver gained notoriety in 2014 when, in response to racial statements made by Donald Sterling, he forced Sterling to sell the Los Angeles Clippers. After some time, Silver permanently disallowed Sterling from playing. Meanwhile, Silver gained worldwide recognition for maintaining the NBA’s impartiality throughout the riots in Hong Kong in 2019.

After eight years as the NBA’s Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer, Silver was promoted to Commissioner. To top it all off, Silver fined Sterling the maximum $2.5 million that the NBA constitution allows for a suspension. Silver convinced the Clippers’ other owners to vote to remove Sterling as owner, effectively eliminating Sterling’s control over the team. Eventually, Sterling lost his ownership stake in the Clippers and was forced to sell.

Sterling was banned from entering Clipper’s arenas and NBA events in general. It was among the harshest penalties ever imposed on the proprietor of a major sports franchise. Silver advocated for the legalization and regulation of sports betting in an opinion piece published in The New York Times on November 13, 2014.
