Alok Sharma Biography and Career:

Alok Sharma, born on September 7, 1967, is a British politician who has served as President of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) and as a Minister of State in the Cabinet Office since 2021. His prior role as Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy was resigned in order to take up the leadership of COP26, although he maintains full Cabinet standing. Sharma has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Reading West since 2010. He is a conservative.

Sharma served in the administration of Prime Minister Theresa May as Minister of State for Housing from 2017 to 2018 and as Minister of State for Employment from 2018 to 2019. He is a member of the Conservative Party. His appointment to the Cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development was announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in January 2019.


The Cabinet reshuffle of 2020 saw him elevated to Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. He held this position until 2021 when he was appointed to the position of Secretary of State for Defence. During his tenure as President of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in 2021, Sharma was instrumental in negotiating the Glasgow Climate Pact.

Sharma was born in the Indian city of Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and migrated to Reading with his family when he was five years old. He was brought up in a Hindu household. During his father’s political career, Prem was active in Reading’s conservative politics, rising to become chairman of the Berkshire area Conservatives before assisting in the formation of the Conservative Parliamentary Friends of India.

In the Reading areas of Earley and Whitley Wood, Sharma grew up and attended Presentation College, Reading Blue Coat School in Sonning, and the University of Salford, where he received his BSc in applied physics with electronics in 1988. Sharma is married and has two children.

He then went on to become a chartered accountant, completing his training with Deloitte Haskins & Sells in Manchester before moving into corporate finance advisory with Nikko Securities and then the Swedish Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, where he held senior positions in London, Stockholm, and Frankfurt, among other locations.

Sharma served as Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party from 2012 to 2015, and as co-chairman of the Conservative Friends of India in 2014.

Sharma was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Mark Hoban, who was then the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, in September 2011. Over the course of his career as a PPS, Sharma served on many committees, including two finance legislation, the 2013 Banking Reform Bill, and two pension laws, all of which passed in 2011. He also worked as the Private Secretary to Sir Oliver Letwin, the former Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, who was in charge of the Cabinet Office on a general level.


Following the deaths of two cyclists in Purley on the Thames in 2014, Sharma began advocating for harsher jail terms for individuals convicted of death by hazardous driving in the following year. Sharma sparked a discussion in Parliament about the matter and endorsed a petition created by the relatives of victims, which garnered more than 55,000 signatures in support of the cause.

On the Great Western line between Reading and London, Sharma advocated for a reduction in the number of first-class cars on trains running on the route. The discussion, which took place in January 2015, was with Rail Minister Claire Perry and First Great Western managing director Mark Hopwood to discuss suggestions to enhance Standard Class capacity in order to relieve overcrowding on the trains.

Sharma was chosen by the Prime Minister of India as the “Infrastructure Envoy to India” in 2016. During the period July 2016 to June 2017, Sharma served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. After the 2017 general election, he was named Housing Minister, taking over for Gavin Barwell, who had lost his seat in the previous election.

As Minister of State for Housing, Sharma was in charge of the government’s reaction to the Grenfell Tower fire, which occurred on June 14. On the 5th of July, 2017, he drew the attention of the media when he seemed clearly upset while giving a speech to the House of Commons. In January 2018, he was appointed to the position of Minister of State for Employment.
