Angeline Ball Biography and Career:

Angeline Ball is an Irish actress born on June 28, 1969, and now lives in London, England. She is most recognized for her performances as Imelda Quirke in Alan Parker’s The Commitments (1991) and as Tina in John Boorman’s The General (1998). Alan Parker and John Boorman directed both films. She has appeared in movies and television programs produced in the United Kingdom and the United States. Additionally, she has performed on stage.

Cabra, Dublin, is where Ball, the youngest of three sisters, debuted globally. She began her dancing education at eight at the Billie Barry Stage School, where she received instruction in tap, ballet, and contemporary dance. Her breakout performance occurred in 1991 when she performed in Alan Parker’s The Commitments as backup vocalist Imelda Quirke.

Over the Rainbow was a short-lived television series created for her in 1993 by Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement. She was also responsible for writing the music for the program. In the film My Girl 2, which she starred in back in 1994, she portrayed the role of Vada’s mother and performed a cover of “Smile” by Charlie Chaplin. In 1996, she once again collaborated with Alan Parker, this time providing background vocals for the album of the Evita soundtrack.

The sister-in-law and mistress of real-life Dublin crime leader Martin Cahill, Tina Lawless, was played by Ball in the 1997 film The General, directed by John Boorman and starring Brendan Gleeson. Ball acted opposite Gleeson in the movie. Throughout the decade of the 2000s, Ball made guest appearances on various television shows in the United Kingdom, including Doc Martin, Shameless, and Mr. Selfridge.

It was in the BBC soap opera EastEnders that she made her first appearance as Maggie Townsend on May 26, 2008, and it was also there that she made her last appearance on June 11, 2008. Ball is a parent to two little ones. In addition to being able to communicate well in French, she is also a certified yoga and pilates teacher. She is a guitarist, and in 2020, she published an album. Today, RTÉ announced the upcoming fall season, including a second season of the critically acclaimed drama series Hidden Assets.

However, the show’s star, Angeline Ball, will not be a cast member for the upcoming season. Instead, the Galway actress Nora-Jane Noone (Jack Taylor, Brooklyn), who is 39 years old, will take over the leading lady role. Fans caught on to the shift when a new poster was unveiled, which included Noone with Simone Kirby and Wouter Hendrickx, two of the cast members from the first season.

When asked by a supporter if this indicated that she would not be returning for the show’s second season, Ball said, “Yep! Ask the producers,” followed by an expression depicting someone swearing. The actress who starred in The Commitments, Acceptable Risk, and Deadly Cuts also portrayed the role of Emer Berry, an investigator with the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), in the first season of this show.

However, the Galway actress Nora-Jane Noone has joined the cast in her place as Claire Wallace, the new lead investigator in command at the CAB. Previously, she had a role in the show but was absent this time. There will also be a new Irish drama in Obituary, a dark comedy about a bored obituary writer who takes things into her own hands. Additionally, there will be new Irish drama in the form of The Gone, a six-part thriller featuring Richard Flood from Grey’s Anatomy.

Thirty years after the film’s initial release, Angeline Ball also pondered on the legacy of “The Commitments,” in which she played the part that launched her career. She also has a role in the forthcoming drama series “Hidden Assets” on RTÉ, which was shot in Clare and was written by Peter McKenna and Morna Regan. “Hidden Assets” was filmed in Clare. The other members of the cast are Wouter Hendrickx, Simone Kirby, and Peter Coonan, with Angeline Ball playing the leading role.

Angeline Ball is now unable to move due to traffic. Even on Sundays, things tend to become backed up in central London, and she has pulled over to chat with me on Zoom: her son Max sits peacefully in the passenger seat, playing his iPad and most likely listening in covertly. Ball has spent the better part of three decades calling the English city home, and she and her French boyfriend, Patrice Gueroult, are the parents of two children.

This week on Screentime, John Fardy speaks to Angeline Ball about her new movie “Deadly Cuts,” in which she plays the leader of a gang of vigilante hairdressers. During their conversation, Angeline also discusses how she reconciled with Imelda Quirke. Tom Sullivan, the writer and director of the film Arracht, set during the Great Famine, discusses the Oscar consideration and the possibility of a Hollywood remake with John. In addition, actor, comedian, and former goalie Terry Alderton discusses the film he considers his all-time favorite.
