Anne Main Biography and Career:
Anne Margaret Main born 17 May 1957 is a British politician who represents the Conservative Party. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for St Albans in the 2005 general election, beating the incumbent Labour MP Kerry Pollard, and was re-elected in 2010. She was first elected as an MP in 2005, and she was re-elected in 2010.
Main married Stephen Tonks in 1978, and the couple has three children: a son, a daughter, and a granddaughter, Nick, Claire, and Jennifer. Stephen passed away from cancer at the age of 34. She married Andrew, an information technology director, with whom she had a fourth child, Alexander, in 1995.
Main’s political career began in 1999 when she was elected to the town council of Beaconsfield, in the county of Buckinghamshire. In an interview with the newspaper, she states that “my family is based in our main home [in Beaconsfield], and I enjoy getting home and seeing my husband in the evening.” She also served on the South Bucks Council for a period of time beginning in 2001. She was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for St Albans in May 2005.
On August 13, 2009, the local St Albans conservative organization decided to maintain her as their candidate for the next general election, which had to be placed by June 3, 2010. According to some reports, the vote was 140 to 20, and she was re-elected by a considerable majority. It was the result of a deselection campaign organized by the local association’s chairperson in response to public criticism of her parliamentary expenditures that led to the local party vote.
Despite a 3.75 percent swing to the Liberal Democrats in the 2010 general election, she was able to retain her seat with an enhanced majority. On the 29th of April, 2013, she was appointed as the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) in Bangladesh.
Main was investigated by The Daily Telegraph in May 2009 for claiming a second home allowance on an apartment where her daughter had lived for part of the time, rent-free, while also claiming back council tax, which is only applicable to residences where there is no one else living there at the time of the investigation. As of the 26th of June, it became clear that she would be subjected to a Parliamentary investigation into these claims under the supervision of John Lyon, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, as a result of a written complaint that was believed to have come from a constituent.
According to the committee’s decision in February 2010, Anne Main was ordered to reimburse them for £7,100 (including £2,100 for food that she had incorrectly claimed, as well as an additional £5,000 to reflect the “emotional benefit” she received from having her daughter present at her second home), as well as to submit a written apology to them.
Main was born in the Welsh capital of Cardiff. She attended the Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales High School at Rookwood Close in Llandaff, Cardiff, where she graduated with honors in 2012. She studied English at Swansea University, earning a BA Hons degree in the process, and it was there that she met her first husband, Stephen. She subsequently went on to get a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from Sheffield University. She relocated to the London region and began working as an English and theatre teacher in an inner-city comprehensive school.
