Anthony Hamilton Biography and Career:

Anthony Hamilton is an R&B, soul, and “neo-soul” singer and songwriter. He catapulted to recognition with his 2003 second album Comin’ from Where I’m From, which produced the hits “Comin’ from Where I’m From,” “Charlene,” and “I’m a Mess.”

When he was 10 years old, Hamilton first became aware of his skill while participating in the chorus at his church. In 1993, he relocated to New York City, where he got a recording contract with Andre Harrell at the Uptown Records label.

While working at Uptown, he recorded XTC, but the song was never played on the radio. His singing of the chorus on the Nappy Roots song “Po’ Folks” was his first exposure to audiences of a more general kind.

The song was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in the year 2003. In addition to that, you can hear him in the single “Why” by Jadakiss and the song “Thugz Mansion” by Tupac.

In the past, in 1997, he had a cameo appearance on Busta Rhymes’ album “When Disaster Strikes,” singing the hook to “Things We Be Doin’ For Money.” However, this presence was mostly unnoticed.

Rhino Records made the album “Soulife” available for purchase in June of 2005. The tracks on this CD were all recorded by Hamilton when he was just starting out in the music industry.

The SoSoDef/Zomba Label Group made the album “Ain’t Nobody Worryin” available for purchase on December 13, 2005. A second compilation CD titled Southern Comfort was published in 2007, and it included songs that were composed and produced during the same time period. After waiting a year, he released his second album, titled The Point of it all, in December 2008.

In addition, Hamilton makes a cameo appearance on the album that blues musician Buddy Guy released in 2005 titled Bring Em In. Hamilton lends his voice to Buddy Guy’s rendition of Bob Dylan’s song Lay Lady Lay on the album.

There are additional guest performances by John Mayer and Carlos Santana on the album Bring Em In. Anthony Hamilton was nominated for the BETJ ‘Cool Like That’ Award in 2006 and went on to win the award. The BET Awards were held that year. In addition, he was awarded a Grammy in 2009 for a performance that was an homage to Al Green.

Anthony Hamilton not only appears in one of the scenes in the 2007 movie “American Gangster,” but he also performs two pieces that are included on the movie’s soundtrack.

At this point in his career, analogies are made between Anthony Hamilton and Bill Withers, and Bobby Womack. He reasoned that the drive he had had since he was a youngster to succeed at greater challenges was the reason he had finally achieved his goal.

Hamilton was born on the 28th of January in 1971, and he spent his childhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. At the age of ten, he became a member of the choir at a nearby church and also sang with the chorus at his high school.

In 1993, Hamilton made the decision to relocate to New York City in order to pursue a music career on a more professional level. Shortly after making this move, he was offered a recording contract by Andre Harrell’s Uptown Records.

In 1995, he was working on the preparations for the release of his first album, but the firm that was going to distribute it went bankrupt, and the CD was left sitting on the shelves. However, his accomplishments do not correspond with the label.

He became a member of the MCA Records roster and released his first album, titled “XTC,” the following year. In spite of the moderate popularity of the single “Nobody Else,” the album did not score on either the Billboard 200 or the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, and as a result, it was taken out of print.

The single “Nobody Else” was the only song on the album. During his spare time, Hamilton would write songs for other musicians, and ultimately, D’Angelo would ask him to perform backup vocals for his “Voodoo Tour.”

At this point, Hamilton had already signed up with a new record company and was in the process of making another solo album. Unfortunately, by the time he got home after D’Angelo’s tour, Soulife Records had already closed its doors for good.

After then, he became well known to the general public after singing the chorus to the song “Po’ Folks” by Nappy Roots. The song was responsible for Hamilton being considered for a Grammy Award nomination in 2003 for “Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.” After then, other cooperation was formed.

His second studio album, “Comin’ from Where I’m From,” was released in 2003, and it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the beginning of December 2004.

The song “Charlene” reached its highest position on the Hot 100 at number 19. In 2005, due to his work on the record, he was considered for the award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Rhino Records issued the first compilation album with the title “Soulife” in the year 2005. In its first week of release, it reached the best position on the Hot 200 chart at number 12 thanks to sales of 53,000 copies.

At the end of 2005, he released his third studio album, titled “Ain’t Nobody Worryin’,” which debuted at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. The following year, in 2007, he released another compilation album titled “Southern Comfort.” This album was the first of his to be rated “Parental Advisory.”

Later, Hamilton signed with Arista Records, and the following year, in 2008, he released his fourth studio album titled “The Point of It All.” The album not only made its debut on the Hot 200 at position number 11, but it also earned generally good reviews from the majority of music reviewers.

When his wife Tarsha gave birth to twin sons in 2010, his personal life was temporarily sidelined as he focused on his new family. After a year had passed, he made his comeback to the music industry with the release of his fifth studio album, titled “Back to Love,” which was distributed by RCA Records in December 2011.
