Atlanta Braves Biography and Career:

Baseball franchise based in Atlanta, the Atlanta Braves. Until now, it is the only major league team to have participated in every season since the beginning of professional baseball. During their history, they have won four World Series championships (1914, 1957, 1995, and 2021) and 18 National League championships (NL). The Boston Red Stockings were created in 1871 by Ivers Whitney Adams as one of the nine founder members of the National Association of Professional Baseball Players, the precursor of the NL.

The Braves were known as the Red Stockings, Red Caps, Rustlers, and Bees during the team’s 82-year stint in Boston. There were four National Association pennants in Boston between 1872 and 1875, ten National League pennants, and a historic World Series championship in 1914 that came after the Braves had been last place as late as July 15. “Spahn and Spain and pray for rain” was the catchphrase for the Braves World Series triumph in 1948, thanks to Warren Spahn and Johnny Spain. As a result of the Braves’ consistent failure to win the World Series in the years following their triumph, the team was relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1953.

The move was made in response to the Braves’ support base being largely replaced by that of the Boston Red Sox in the American League. In Milwaukee County Stadium, the reconstructed team quickly improved and went on to win two pennants (1957, 1958) and a World Series (1957) behind the hitting of Hank Aaron and Eddie Matthews and the pitching of Spahn and Lew Burdette Braves finished with winning records every year they were in Milwaukee (13 of 13 seasons). Attendance at their ballparks plummeted in the 1960s, and the team moved to Atlanta in 1965. Braves owner Ted Turner bought the team in 1976 and began airing all of the team’s games on his cable “superstation,” WTCG (WTBS, or TBS, from 1979).

Despite the fact that many said that TBS’s coverage of the Braves was unwarranted and overtly biassed. John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox rejuvenated the franchise in the 1990s after a string of poor seasons and two playoff appearances (1969 and 1982) in its first 25 seasons in Atlanta. David Justice and Chipper Jones were among the Braves’ batters who helped lead the team to a first-place finish in the National League East that year. Braves fans can look back on a historic run that spanned over a decade in the 1990s and early 2000s. The Braves won 14 straight division titles from 1991 to 2005 (with the exception of the 1994 season, which was not completed due to a labor dispute), made it to five World Series in that decade, and won their third World Series championship in 1995.

TBS ceased its national broadcasts of Braves games in 2007 after Time Warner (which had bought the team in a 1996 merger with Turner Broadcasting System) sold the team. In 2010, the Braves returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2004 but were defeated in five games. In 2011 the team lost an 8 1/2-game lead in the Wild Card standings with four weeks to go and missed the playoffs, which was the second-worst September collapse in MLB history.

On their return in 2012, however, the Braves were easily dispatched in a new one-game Wild Card playoff game by the St. Louis Cardinals (the team that had edged out Atlanta for that position the year before). For the first time in eight years, the Braves won a division title in 2013, however, they were beaten in the first round of the playoffs. This rebuilding period, which began after Atlanta missed the playoffs in 2015 (67–95), saw the Braves post the poorest record in a quarter-century for the team. As a result, the Braves qualified for the playoffs earlier than most baseball experts expected, despite losing their first playoff series in four games.

This year, the Atlanta Braves young core won 97 games and another division title before losing in the first round of the playoffs once again. When the Atlanta Braves made their NLCS come back in 2020, they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers after blowing a 3-1 series lead. Atlanta earned their revenge by winning a six-game NLCS to advance to their first World Series appearance in 22 years against the Dodgers the following year. A six-game victory over Houston Astros in the World Series clinched Atlanta’s fourth championship in a row.
