Baltimore Orioles Biography and Career:
The Baltimore Orioles are a professional baseball club headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland that competes in the American League. The Orioles, who competed in the American League (AL), won three World Series championships, in 1966, 1970, and 1983. The franchise was renamed the St. Louis Browns in 1902.
A syndicate of Baltimore commercial and civic interests headed by attorney and civic leader Clarence Miles and Baltimore Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. bought the franchise in November 1953 after 52 years in St. Louis. Mr. Peter Angelos, an American trial lawyer, is now the team’s owner.
The Baltimore Orioles chose their team name in honour of the official state bird of Maryland; the name had previously been used by several baseball clubs in the city, including another American League charter member franchise, the “Baltimore Orioles,” which relocated north to New York in 1903 and eventually became the Yankees. In 1999, the Baltimore Orioles flew to Cuba, where they became the first American baseball club to play a game in the country in 40 years, defeating the Cuban national team in the process.
After finishing last in the American League East for four straight seasons (2008–11), the Baltimore Orioles saw a jolt of improvement in 2012, adding 24 victories to their 2011 total and qualifying for the team’s first postseason berth in 15 years. Despite the fact that the club was eliminated in a five-game Division Series, Baltimore earned its first division championship since 1997 and went to the American League Championship Series two years later (a four-game loss to the Kansas City Royals).
The team’s recovery, however, was short-lived, as the Orioles went on to lose a franchise-record 115 games in the 2018 season. Baltimore’s difficulties persisted in the following years, as the team concluded the 2021 season with a record of 110 defeats.
