Barbara Eden Biography and Career:

On August 23, 1931, in Tucson, Arizona, Barbara Eden entered the world. A daughter born to Alice Mary and Hubert Henry Morehead. Her birth certificate lists her given name as Barbara Jean Morehead. When Eden’s parents split up, she was just three years old and was living with her mother. She then relocated to San Francisco with her mom and spent most of her formative years there. When Barbara was a little girl, her mother would sing to her to keep her from getting bored. These experiences encouraged Barbara to pursue a career in the film industry.

Eden received his high school graduation from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1949. Eden had participated in the school’s cheerleading team back when she was a student. She had a successful music career as a pop vocalist when she was a teenager. Barbara, unlike most other actresses, decided to pursue acting instruction because she thought it would enhance her singing abilities, rather than because she was easily tempted by the glitz of the film business and a few moments that inspired her.

Barbara completed her undergraduate degree at San Francisco’s City College, where she also studied theatre for a year. She entered a few beauty contests in the early 1950s and won “Miss San Francisco” in one of them. Sometime in the early 1950s, she tried her hand at entering beauty pageants. For many, Barbara Eden represents one of Hollywood’s rare truly ageless beauties. It’s remarkable that Eden has been able to keep her followers even up to the present day in an industry where so many lovely personalities and stunning faces have been forgotten during the course of their careers.

American audiences first became familiar with Barbara in her role as “Jeannie” on the popular sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. She had already appeared in a dozen unsuccessful pictures before this. Fans of the show can be found all around the world. The first edition of the comedy show aired on television fifty years ago, yet many viewers still have fond memories of their favorite moments. Doing this one thing also made way for a plethora of other possibilities to present themselves. In addition, Barbara has been one of the busiest actors in show business history because of her extensive resume. She’s been working for nearly 50 years now.

Barbara has assisted in the production of more than 50 television shows and has worked on the set of about 21 films. Eden has worked with many of Hollywood’s top studios, such as “Twentieth Century Fox,” “Columbia,” and “Tristar,” which have all produced numerous films she has written. Barbara has been known to make cameo appearances in a wide range of TV shows and commercials, and she still does so regularly. As evidenced by her vocal contributions to a number of songs in at least one of her films, Eden is also a talented vocalist.

Barbara’s first film as an actor was the 1956 release Back From Eternity. She had played a role that was practically unnoticeable to the audience—that of a blonde college student. In 1957, she was asked to appear in the TV show “How to Marry a Millionaire,” which was based on a movie of the same name. In the play she was in, she played a woman who hoped to marry a wealthy man.

From the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, Barbara was a familiar face on American television, making appearances in shows like “I Love Lucy,” “Perry Mason,” “Gunsmoke,” and “Route 66” as well as a dozen more that are largely forgotten today. Barbara appeared alongside the late great Elvis Presley in the 1960 film Flamingo Star. Both Elvis and Barbara made cameo appearances in this film. Eden had a prominent role in the film as the female lead and Presley’s love interest.

Because of the famous author Sidney Sheldon’s promise to cast Barbara in his upcoming comedy, “I Dream of Jeannie,” Barbara’s life was turned upside down. After airing for five successful seasons between 1965 and 1970, this show is now considered a classic among fans of the genre. Three of Eden’s most notable performances all came to fruition in the ’70s. The first was in the film ‘A Howling in the Woods,’ in which she reteamed with her ‘I Dream of Jeannie co-star Larry Hagman. The second of these roles was as Beverly in the television sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies. The other two films were titled “The Woman Hunter” and “The Stranger Within,” respectively.

In the 1978 comedy film “Harper Valley PTA,” based on a popular American folk tune, Barbara played a major role. The movie did so well that it was decided to adapt it into a TV show at a later date. All of these productions featured Barbara in the lead role. Even though Barbara has been a part of many productions throughout the course of her career, the part of Jeannie she portrayed in the landmark television series “I Dream of Jeannie,” which debuted in 1965, is the one that has garnered her the most fame.

In 1985, the show She Dreamed of Jeannie returned to television under the title “I Dream of Jeannie, Fifteen Years Later,” with Eden reprising her role from the original series. At the time, the performance was immensely popular. Back in 1997, rumors circulated that the massive Hollywood studio known as “Columbia Pictures” was considering adapting the hit TV show into a film. It has been theorized that Eden will play Jeannie’s aunt in the film. Nevertheless, there is no proof that such a project has ever been completed successfully.

In 1961, Eden was brought to the notice of the Laurel Awards’ judging panel. She was a candidate for the “Top Female New Personality” award at the time. While Eden did finish in the top 10, she did not win the award. In addition, Eden was nominated for the prestigious “Golden Globe” awards twice: first in 1967 and again in 1970. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is responsible for handing out these honors annually. She was nominated for “Best TV star” for her role as Jeannie on the long-running TV series “I Dream of Jeannie,” for which she is known.
