Batavia Muckdogs Biography and Career:

The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s Batavia Muckdogs are a collegiate summer baseball team from Batavia, New York (PGCBL). They’re in the city of Batavia, in the county of Genesee, in the state of New York. Dwyer Stadium in Batavia serves as the team’s home ground. From 1939 until 2020, they were a part of the New York–Penn League of Minor League Baseball (NYPL). Batavia was not included in MLB’s upcoming reorganization of the minor leagues, which will take place after the 2020 season. In 2021, they joined the PGCBL. Professional baseball in Batavia dates back to 1897 when the city’s first team competed in the New York State League.

When the Batavia Giants, commonly referred to as the Reds because of their crimson uniforms, made their debut on May 14, 1897, against the Auburn organization, future major league Jack Burns batting third and playing shortstop. Martin Earley, the squad’s manager, was sacked after the team lost its first nine games of the season. After J.J. Benner took over the team as captain and acting manager, things didn’t improve and he was replaced by Joe Hornung, a former big leaguer, who was designated player-manager on May 24. Hornung made his debut in the lineup on June 14 at the age of 40, going 0-for-4.

Despite the squad’s 4–16 record and financial difficulties, Hornung left the team on July 9 after just 20 games. On July 24th, the team announced that they will relocate to Geneva, and on July 25th, the Geneva Alhambras was born. The Class-C New York State League also included teams in Canandaigua, Cortland, Lyons, Palmyra, and Auburn during that season. Prior to and beyond the Giants’ departure from Batavia, Batavia hosted numerous semi-professional leagues. The Western New York League was represented, as were the clubs in LeRoy, Perry, and Warsaw, all within driving distance. After professional baseball returned to Batavia in 1939, the Batavia Bees, a popular semi-professional team, continued to play.

New York–Penn League’s roots may be traced back to Batavia when the league was founded at a local hotel that has since been demolished, now known as the PONY League. There were six original cities in the league: Batavia; Bradford; Hamilton; Jamestown; Niagara Falls; and Olean. The Batavia Indians were the team’s name from 1957 to 1959, and the Batavia Pirates were the team’s name from 1961 to 1987.

The Batavia Clippers were renamed the Muckdogs in 1998 after a public election selected the nickname and logo for the team during the 1988–97 season. Genesee County’s mucklands inspired the “Muckdogs” name. The lone surviving founder member of the league, Batavia, celebrated its 80th anniversary during the 2019 season. Prior to the 2018 season, the Muckdogs franchise was handed over to the league. The team was a ward of the league at that time. After the 2020 minor league season was canceled, Major League Baseball assumed control of Minor League Baseball and ended the short-season competition.

As a result, the Muckdogs will no longer be participating in affiliated baseball. Summer collegiate baseball and semi-professional baseball leagues have made bids to the city for 2021. The Muckdogs joined the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League in 2021 after being purchased by CAN-USA Sports. In 1998, the Muckdogs acquired a logo depicting a dog atop a muck-covered fence surrounded by baseballs. The team’s alternate logo features a B and a dog. While the Muckdogs now have only one mascot, Dewey, previous seasons at Dwyer Stadium have seen three different mascots make appearances. Maxwell T. Chomper, Homer, and Slider were the team’s original mascots.

Batavia’s Muckdogs were an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies from 1998 to 2006, having been with the Phillies since 1988. The Philadelphia Phillies’ Short-Season A affiliate, the Williamsport Crosscutters, was relocated to Philadelphia in the 2007 season. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals signed the Muckdogs. It was also connected with the New York Mets (1972–74), Detroit Tigers (1968–71), and Cleveland Indians (1942–51; 1957–59; 1976–86) before the Cardinals and Phillies connection. Cito Gaston of the Atlanta Braves was one of 12 players on the team’s co-op squad in 1966, which featured players from a variety of other teams.

They formed another co-op squad in 1975 with players from eight different clubs, including former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Don McCormack. The last Batavia co-op squad was formed in 1987. Before moving to Batavia in 2012, the St. Louis Cardinals indicated that they would return to their previous relationship with the State College Spikes. By signing a two-year player development pact with Miami Marlins affiliate the Jamestown Jammers from 2002 to 2011 on September 28, the Muckdogs announced on September 28, 2012. The Pittsburgh Pirates, who had already left State College, struck an association agreement with Jamestown.
