Wight was a bright young athlete. His high school, Wyman King Academy in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, had basketball and American football teams.

On the football field, he was a tight end, and on the basketball floor, he was a centre. After a disagreement with the coach, he quit football. In his second year, he joined the cheerleading squad. Wight attended Northern Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, where he played basketball. He left Northern Oklahoma to attend Wichita State. Wight was on their basketball squad. In 1992-93, he attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he joined the NCAA Division II Cougars basketball team and the Xi Beta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

Paul Wight had surgery in the early 1990s to stop his pituitary gland from growing. Due to his girth, he stopped renting cars and flying in 2005. But his job forces him to travel much. So he hired a bus and hired a driver. Wight has two wives. He married Melissa Ann Piavis on Valentine’s Day 1997 and they have a daughter named Cierra. They divorced two years later, on February 6, 2002.

He then paid $5,000 to Larry Sharpe’s Monster Factory for training. Sharpe had gout at the time, so Wight trained with Johnny Polo. Wight debuted for the WWA on December 3, 1994, at Clementon, New Jersey, losing to WWA Heavyweight Champion Frank Finnegan. His debut in WWA was also his final match with the promotion. In 1995, he signed a lucrative deal with WCW. His WCW debut saw him billed as André the Giant’s son, but it was immediately dropped.

He debuted as The Giant and faced WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hogan at the 1995 Halloween Havoc. He won the match and hence the championship belt, reigning for a few days before being stripped of it. After weeks of feuding with nWo members, he joined the stable in 1996 and stayed until December. During this time, he won the World War 3 battle royal and challenged Hogan for the World Heavyweight title. Affirmed and kicked out of nWo He then feuded with Kevin Nash. Wight had lost faith in WCW by 1999.
