Bill O’Reilly is a well-known figure in the American media as a TV host, radio host, and book. ‘The O’Reilly Factor,’ which he hosts on Fox News Channel, has been the most-watched cable news program for the past 13 years. Initially, O’Reilly worked as a news anchor and reporter in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He quickly moved up the ranks, working in comparable capacities for news outlets in cities like Dallas, Boston, and New York. ‘Inside Edition,’ a CBS program, catapulted him to celebrity and provided him the widespread recognition he craved.
He left “Inside Edition” to go back to school, only to be hired as a newscaster and political commentator for “The O’Reilly Factor” on ABC News. The show has been innovative ever since it first aired; this includes a unique combination of news analysis and investigative reporting. He has written several books, some of which have become bestsellers, in addition to hosting programs on television and radio. His forceful interview style and willingness to be openly critical of prominent world figures have earned him a reputation for acerbic commentary.
Born William James ‘Bill’ O’Reilly, Jr. to parents William James Sr. and Winifred Angela Drake O’Reilly in New York City, Bill O’Reilly is known by his middle name. His family moved to Levittown, Long Island, two years after he was born.
He attended St. Brigid Parochial School in Westbury until eighth grade, and then, per his dad’s request, he transferred to Chaminade High School for his high school years. In high school, he was both the team’s goaltender and a Little League baseball player. In 1967, once he had completed high school, he enrolled in Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He became involved in both football and the school newspaper. In addition, he pitched for the New York Monarchs of semi-professional baseball.

With his reporting on skyjacking, he even took home an Emmy. He began working as a host and correspondent for WCBS-‘7:30 TV’s Magazine,’ a local news feature program, in 1980. He won his second Emmy for his investigation that uncovered the city marshals’ corruption.
Because of his exceptional skill at work, he was promoted to the position of news correspondent at CBS News. From Buenos Aires, Argentina, he oversaw coverage of the conflicts in El Salvador and the Falkland Islands. Yet, he left CBS because of the unacknowledged use of riot video. In 1986, he spoke on the loss of his friend, ABC News correspondent Joe Spencer. After hearing his good news, the president of ABC News invited him to become a correspondent for the network.
Among his first responsibilities at ABC was hosting daytime news briefings that previewed stories to be covered on that night’s World News Tonight. In addition, he covered general assignments for GMA, Nightline, and World News Tonight, among other ABC News programs.
When the television tabloid show ‘Inside Edition’ first premiered in 1989, he decided to join the cast. After David Frost was let go, he took over as the show’s host. As the host of “Inside Edition,” he was able to get his hands on exclusive broadcasts, such as his coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall and his first-ever interview with killer Joel Steinberg. In addition, he arrived at the scene of the Los Angeles riot in 1992 before any other television anchor.
He left “Inside Edition” in 1995 after becoming a national media figure and attended Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. His thesis topic was “Theory of Coerced Drug Rehabilitation,” which he successfully defended. He completed graduate studies in public administration in 1996. After graduating from Harvard, he went back into the media and was recruited by Roger Allies, CEO of the then-new Fox News Channel, to host their flagship show, initially called “The O’Reilly Report” but eventually renamed “The O’Reilly Factor.”
