Billy Joel Biography and Career:

William Martin Joel was born on May 9, 1949, in The Bronx, New York, United States, to Howard Joel, a German-Jewish holocaust survivor and an outstanding pianist, and Rosalind Nyman, Howard’s wife. Billy Joel was named after his father. His family relocated to the Levitt homes district of Hicksville on Long Island shortly after he was born, and it is where he spent his boyhood. It was in 1953 that he first started taking piano lessons, and he quickly exhibited a talent for playing the instrument. Both the renowned American pianist Morton Estrin and the musician and composer Timothy Ford were his teachers at one point.

In 1963, he became a member of his first band, which at the time was called “The Echoes” but would eventually be renamed “The Lost Souls.” He collaborated with the band to record a number of his instrumental compositions. During this time, he decided to forego his senior year of high school in order to concentrate on his musical career. In 1967, he parted ways with the band known as “The Lost Souls” to become a member of a new group known as “The Hassles.” It was a band from Long Island that had just inked a contract with ‘United Artists Record.’

After releasing their first studio album titled “The Hassles,” the band went on to record their second studio album titled “Hour of the Wolf” the following year. Both albums were a commercial disappointment for their respective labels.  In 1969, he and the band’s drummer, Joe Small, both parted ways with the group and went on to establish a heavy metal duet together under the moniker “Attila.”

They made their debut in July of 1970 with an album that was created with “Epic Records.” Due to disagreements over several aspects of their personal lives, the couple broke up quite quickly. 1971 was the year that he released his first solo album, titled “Cold Spring Harbor,” after signing a recording deal with the label known as “Family Productions.” Despite this, the record was a failure from a technical standpoint since it was mastered at an inappropriately fast pace.

A couple of years later, “Columbia Records” published a remastered version of the album. Some of the tracks on the album were either re-orchestrated or trimmed to fit the new time constraints. Soon after that, he moved from the West Coast to Los Angeles because of a disagreement with a contract, and he began playing the piano at a piano bar known as “The Executive Room” on Wilshire Boulevard under the name “Bill Martin.” During this period, he wrote his hallmark song, “Piano Man,” which became a huge success.

In 1972, the Philadelphia radio station WMMR-FM began playing his live concert recording of “Captain Jack,” which quickly became a chart-topping hit on the East Coast. WMMR-FM was the first station to broadcast the track. After listening to the song, the executives at ‘Columbia Records’ presented him with the opportunity to sign a recording deal. Before moving back to New York, he spent the previous three years recording with the label known as “Columbia Records.”

In 1973, he worked in the studios of Columbia Records in Los Angeles to make the album titled “Piano Man.” It eventually became his first song to reach the top 20 and his first album to be certified gold.
In 1976, he relocated to New York City and started a new band, filling out its lineup with musicians of his own choosing. In the same year, he began his very first concert tour around the country. In 1978, he released his second album, titled “52nd Street,” which was considered to be more refined and jazzy than his first album. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential albums of all time.

In 1979, he went to Cuba in order to take part in an event that was held there for three days and was dubbed the “Havana Jam Festival” at the “Karl Marx Theatre.” 1980 was the year that he published the album known as “Glass Houses,” which quickly rose to the front of the “Billboard Album Chart” and remained there for a total of six straight weeks. Songs in the Attic was the title of an album that he released the next year in 1981. This CD included live renditions of his early career songs that were not very well known at the time they were written down. His admirers got to hear several of his early pieces for the first time on this CD.

He released an album with the title “The Innocent Man” in the year 1983. This album was an homage to the popular American music that he listened to while he was in his adolescent years, and it delivered him his second success on the Billboard charts. Cold Spring Harbor, his debut album, was reissued by Columbia Records in the same year it was first published. In 1986, he released his eleventh studio album, which was titled “The Bridge.” The record was the result of a joint effort on the part of Billy, Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper, and Steve Winwood. It was the source of commercially successful hits like “Matter of Trust” and “A Modern Woman.”

After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, he was the first American rock artist to play in the Soviet Union. That performance took place in 1987. Additionally, he gave performances in the cities of Moscow, Leningrad, and Tbilisi. It was in October of that year that he published his live CD, which he titled KOHUEPT (which is Russian meaning Concert). In 1989, he collaborated with producer Mick Jones to record the album titled “Storm Front.” The hit song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” was included on Billy Joel’s eleventh studio album, titled “Storm Front,” which also included the album’s title track. River of Dreams, which was released by him in 1993, was his last album in the pop genre.
