Bob Weir Biography and Career:

As the founder of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir holds a unique position in American music. Throughout the Dead’s 30-year tenure, Weir served as their skeleton. He contributed several of their most well-known tunes, provided a subtle yet distinct counterpoint to Jerry Garcia’s fluid leads, and served as an inspiration for a musical subculture that is still active today.

Weir worked on RatDog and other post-Dead re-formation projects after Garcia passed away in 1995. Bob Weir’s career was revived by the 2014 film The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead concerts. To tour the band’s discography with John Mayer, he and two bandmates formed Dead & Company. In 2016, he released Blue Mountain, and in 2022, he founded Wolf Bros.

Eleanor and Frederic Weir, Bob Weir’s parents, raised him in Atherton. He turned to guitar at the age of 13 from piano and trumpet. He was sent to a Colorado boarding school because he struggled academically and had undiagnosed dyslexia. There, he met John Perry Barlow. He returned to the Bay Area on New Year’s Eve 1963 and ran across Jerry Garcia.

Garcia was five years older than Weir and already well-known in the local folk scene as a guitarist and banjo player, but the two discovered a musical connection that they would explore for many years. Jug bands evolved into the electric Warlocks, who then evolved into the Grateful Dead, after serving as the live music for Ken Kesey’s 1965 film Acid Tests. By alternating between Phil Lesh’s avant-garde basslines and Jerry Garcia’s supple, expressive lead guitar, Weir refined his rhythmic style.

Lesh joined the Dead after taking lessons from Luciano Berio at Mills College in trumpet and serial music. Long, meandering improvisations gave the group their psychedelic hybrid sound. Weir’s rhythm playing infused the music with life and color. Like a jazz guitarist, his contributions were usually understated but had a big impact on the mood. Although less successfully, Ace Weir’s early songwriting was similar to that of Garcia and Lesh. He reconnected with Barlow in the start of the 1970s, and they started working together.

Weir quickly began crafting songs like “Sugar Magnolia” in his own style, fusing Americana with unusual vocalizations. As Ron “Pigpen” McKernan’s health began to deteriorate, Weir developed a stage persona to go along with his rich baritone. He collaborated with future Dead members Keith and Donna Godchaux to create his solo album Ace in 1972. The classic Weir songs “Playing in the Band,” “Cassidy,” and “One More Saturday Night” were all written by Ace.

He continued the Dead’s rigorous tour schedule in the late 1970s while also playing with Kingfish, leading the Bob Weir Band, and recording Heaven Help the Fool. His contributions to Dead albums and live performances include “Estimated Prophet” and “I Need a Miracle.” In the 1980s, Weir only released one solo album, Bobby and the Midnites. Their extensive grassroots fan base and decades of touring helped them establish a special position in American culture, and their 1987 single “Touch of Grey” helped them become well-known to a new generation.

The band entered the 1990s with a sizable multigenerational fan base and a sizable jam band network in their wake. When Garcia’s drug addiction worsened, Weir took over as a de facto bandleader. After Garcia’s passing in 1995, this position was kept. He went to his side project RatDog to fill the vacuum left by the breakup of the Dead. They traveled frequently, performing new Weir songs and altered Dead songs, with a revolving lineup.

At this time, The Other Ones, who were essentially the Grateful Dead minus Garcia, formed. Weir developed further as a bandleader and seasoned veteran for new jam bands in the twenty-first century. Together with Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, The Other Ones evolved into The Dead. After that, Weir and Lesh created Furthur before bringing RatDog back in 2013. Plans for the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary started a year later.

First, The Other One: The Long Strange Trip of Bob Weir from the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival. The group came back together in 2015 for final performances in Chicago and San Francisco. Garcia was replaced by Trey Anastasio, a former Dead follower whose band Phish took up the mantle in the 1990s. Another competent, if improbable, the lead guitarist was sought by Weir, Hart, and Kreutzmann to help them tour the Dead’s discography.

Garcia was replaced by John Mayer for the 2016 tour by Dead & Company. Weir released Blue Mountain, his first solo effort in forty years. Josh Kaufman and Josh Ritter collaborated on the ethereal, low-key album Blue Mountain. Colorado-based After performing with Lesh in duo performances, Weir started Wolf Bros. in 2018. Although COVID-19 forced them to postpone their 2020 tour, they resumed it the next year and released Live in Colorado in 2022.
