Brad Evans Biography and Career:

Evans Grippando was born in Phoenix, Arizona, to Tom and Dawn Grippando, where he grew up with his older brother and two younger sisters. Evans attended Mountain Pointe High School and was a four-year member of the school’s soccer team, in which he scored 54 goals. During his junior and senior seasons, he was chosen to the All-State team and served as team captain. He also played for the Tempe Warriors youth club for a total of ten seasons.

He is married to Becky, supports Liverpool, and is a fan of Zinedine Zidane’s football team. While playing college soccer, the midfielder attended the University of California, Irvine, where he majored in social sciences with a minor in education while also pursuing his degree.

In four years of play for the UC Irvine Anteaters, Evans set a school record with 31 goals and finished his four-year career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 73 points (a school record). In 2005 and 2006, he was named Big West Offensive Player of the Year, and in 2006, he was named to the All-American team. During the collegiate off-season, Evans was a member of the Orange County Blue Star of the Premier Development League, where he played alongside future Sierra Leonean international Kei Kamara and future United States international Sacha Kljestan.

Evans appeared in six matches and scored four goals during the 2004 season. During the 2005 season, he appeared in just one game, scoring one goal in a 1–0 victory over the San Diego Gauchos at UC Irvine. Evans appeared in eight games for Blue Star during his final season with the team, scoring twice in victories over Los Angeles and Bakersfield respectively. Evans, who was born in Phoenix, was taken by the Columbus Crew in the second round of the 2007 Major League Soccer SuperDraft out of the University of California, Irvine.

He played with the Crew for two seasons before being selected by the Seattle Sounders in the 2008 Expansion Draft. In October 2012, he was named “Player of the Week” for his two-goal effort against FC Dallas. Evans has made 27 appearances for the senior national team, including five appearances for the under-20 national team at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship. He has also represented the senior national team at the 2009 FIFA World Cup.

As a member of the United States U-20 national team that competed in the 2005 FIFA World Cup under Sigi Schmid, Evans was used as a replacement during the team’s 0–0 draw with Germany and started at right-back during the team’s 1–0 victory over Egypt in Group D. He did not appear in the 3–1 Round of 16 loss to Italy that followed a few weeks later.

Evans was called up to the senior team for the 2009 Gold Cup, which kicked off with a match against the United States at Qwest Field in Seattle on June 1. Having entered the game against Grenada in the 63rd minute and got an immediate yellow card for entering the game too early, Evans did not play in the subsequent 2–0 win over Honduras but did play in the subsequent 2–2 tie with Haiti. As a substitute during a 2–1 quarterfinal victory over Panama on July 18, Evans competed in the knockout stages.

He entered the game in the 110th minute. During the Gold Cup semifinal triumph against Honduras on July 23 and the Gold Cup final loss to Mexico on July 26, he went unnoticed as a replacement. Evans made his professional debut in a 2–1 friendly victory over El Salvador in February 2010 and did not appear in any games in 2011. In January 2012, he came on as a second-half replacement in the United States 1–0 friendly triumphs over Venezuela in his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, and Panama.

Evans was named to the United States national team’s training camp in January 2013, and he appeared in a 0–0 friendly against Canada at BBVA Compass Stadium that month. He was later called upon to play for his country during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, despite being an unused substitute in a loss to Honduras in the previous match.

Evans was added to United States coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s camp roster for the months of May and June, where he used the Sounders midfielder as a late substitute in a loss to Belgium and allowed Evans to start against Germany during the United States Soccer Federation’s centennial celebrations, a 4–3 win in Washington.

While playing as a right-back for the United States against Germany in a friendly and against Jamaica in a qualification match, Klinsmann gave Evans the opportunity to score his first international goal in stoppage time. This proved to be a wise decision as Evans scored his first international goal in the latter match, a 2–1 victory for the United States.
