Bruce Kovner Biography and Career:

Bruce Stanley Kovner is a well-known investor, manager of hedge funds, and giver of money in the United States. In 1945, he was born in the United States. He started CAM Capital in January 2012 to handle his investing, trading, and other business activities. Kovner started Caxton Associates, LP in 1983, and until 2011, he was the Chairman of the company. Caxton Associates, LP is a company that trades in many different things.

Kovner is now Vice Chairman of the Board at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Chairman of the Board at The Juilliard School. He is also on the Board of Directors for both the Metropolitan Opera and the American Enterprise Institute. Bruce Stanley Kovner was born in the borough of Brooklyn in the city of New York to an engineer named Isidore Kovner and his father’s wife, Sophie Kovner.

Isidore was a semi-professional football player for a short time. Before moving to a suburb of Los Angeles in 1953, Kovner lived in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn with his parents and three siblings. During those years when Kovner was growing up, he was surrounded by family. He was a high achiever from the start and went on to become a Merit Scholar. At Van Nuys High School, he was President of the Student Body at the age of 16. He was also a good basketball player and pianist.

Kovner went to Harvard College in 1962, but his time there was clouded by the fact that his mother killed herself by hanging herself in the family home in Van Nuys in 1965. Even though this was true, his classmates liked him and thought he was a good student. Kovner stayed a student at Harvard. He went to the John F. Kennedy School of Government to study political economy, especially with the well-known conservative researcher Edward C. Banfield.

Kovner didn’t finish all of the requirements for his Ph. D., but he did keep learning at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government until 1970. Over the next few years, he did a lot of different things, like work on political campaigns, study the harpsichord, become a writer, and drive a taxi. When he was working as a lawyer, not long after he married his now ex-wife Sarah Peter, he got his first taste of the world of commodities trading.

In 1977, Kovner did his first deal, which was to use his MasterCard to borrow $3,000 to invest in soybean futures contracts. When his investment went up to $40,000, he waited until the price of the contract went down to $23,000 before selling it. Later, he said that his first transaction, which made him nervous, had taught him how important it is to manage risks well.

He reportedly became a trader at Commodities Corporation, which is now part of Goldman Sachs, and worked for Michael Marcus. He is said to have made millions of dollars in this job and gained a lot of respect as a fair and sensible trader. In the end, this is what led to the founding of Caxton Associates in 1983. During its peak, Caxton Associates managed assets worth nearly $14 billion, but it hasn’t accepted new investors since 1992. Between 2002 and 2016, Kovner worked for Synta Pharmaceuticals as a director. In September 2011, Kovner told Caxton’s board of directors that he would be leaving his job as CEO.

He will be replaced by Andrew Law. Kovner started CAM Capital in January 2012 to handle all of his business, investing, and trading projects. Kovner started the Kovner Foundation in 1996 to give money to groups that promote excellence in the arts and education, defend private enterprise and protect individual rights, and do scholarly studies and research that strengthen democratic principles in the United States.

Kovner has been a supporter of The Juilliard School for a long time. Since 2001, he has been the School’s chairman of the board. Bruce Kovner and his wife, Suzie Kovner, gave sixty million dollars to Juilliard in 2013 to start the Kovner Fellowship Program. This was the most important thing anyone has ever done for the institution. In 2012, Kovner gave Juilliard $20 million to help pay for its graduate program in historical performance. In 2006, Kovner also sent a group of music manuscripts he had collected to Juilliard.

Kovner is both an important backer of the renovation of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the vice chairman of the organization. He is also the managing director of the Metropolitan Opera, which means he is on the board of directors for the opera. Kovner started and led the School Choice Scholarships Foundation, which gave scholarships to New York City students from low-income families to help them pay for school.

He has been a big fan of other charter schools, like the Success Academy Charter Schools, where his wife Suzie is on the board of directors. Kovner has helped conservative causes in a number of important ways. In January 2012, he gave about $500,000 to a Super PAC called Restore our Future that was backing Mitt Romney’s campaign for president. Before, the board of trustees of the American Enterprise Institute chose him to be chairman, and he did that job. Richard Perle and James Q. Wilson, two big names in the neoconservative movement, were among his close friends.

Dick Cheney, who was George W. Bush’s Vice President, is also one of his friends. At the beginning of his career, he backed the conservative Manhattan Institute and put money into the daily newspaper The New York Sun. A document written by Robert Brulle says that his foundation gave money to conservative groups from 2003 to 2010. These groups may have helped with conservative climate change research.
