Buffalo Bisons Biography and Career:

The Buffalo Bisons (also known as the Herd) are a Minor League Baseball team based in Buffalo, New York, that serves as the Triple-A East affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. The team is based in Buffalo, New York, and plays its home games at Sahlen Field, which has the largest capacity of any Triple-A baseball stadium in the United States.

The current Buffalo Bison’s franchise was established in 1979 and took over the history of previous franchises that had also used the Buffalo Bisons name, most notably the 1886–1970 Buffalo Bisons minor league franchise and the 1879–1885 Buffalo Bisons major league franchise, both of which were established in Buffalo.

The Buffalo Bisons founded the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 to commemorate past players, managers, and others who have made significant contributions to the sport in Buffalo. The team holds the all-time record for single-season attendance in Minor League Baseball, having sold 1,240,951 tickets in 1991 while being considered for inclusion in the Major League Baseball expansion draught the following year.

The team changed its name to the Buffalo Bisons and began playing at War Memorial Stadium in 1979. Buffalo Bison’s teams had played in the city from 1877 to 1970, and this new franchise adopted the history of those teams during that time period. Robert E. Rich Jr. purchased the Bisons for $100,000 in 1983, and after purchasing the Wichita Aeros for $1 million in 1985, the team was promoted to the Triple-A level of the American Association.

With the team’s increasing popularity came the rise of Rich Jr., who was renowned for his inventive advertising tie-ins, which included an annual series of post-game concerts by The Beach Boys. The Buffalo Bisons moved to Pilot Field (now Sahlen Field) in downtown Buffalo for the 1988 season, a $42.4 million project that cost $42.4 million.

The Bisons broke the all-time Minor League Baseball attendance record in their first season at the arena after relocating from War Memorial Stadium, bringing 1,186,651 fans during the 1988, As a result of their unsuccessful 1993 attempt to gain entry into Major League Baseball, the team won two division titles and set attendance records in the following years. The team’s attendance of 1,240,951 fans in a single season in 1991 still stands as a Minor League Baseball record.

Prior to the 1995 season, the Cleveland Indians took over as the Major League Baseball affiliate of the Buffalo Bisons, taking over from the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1996 and 1997, the squad won division crowns, and in 1997, the team won the ultimate championship of the American Association. When Bartolo Colón pitched a no-hitter against the New Orleans Zephyrs on June 20, 1997, it was the first in the franchise’s history. The Bisons joined the International League in 1998 after the American Association was disbanded following the 1997 season.

The Bisons were previously a member of the American Association. In their inaugural season, the team won the division and league championships, but they were defeated in the Triple-A World Series. Incorporating regional rivalries paved the door for the establishment of the Thruway Cup, an annual battle between the Buffalo Bisons, the Rochester Red Wings, and the Syracuse SkyChiefs in Buffalo, New York.

The Bisons went on to win division championships in 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2005, as well as the league championship at home in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Prior to the 2009 season, the Buffalo Bisons were affiliated with the New York Mets, who took over for the Cleveland Indians as the team’s Major League Baseball affiliate.

This period was marked by poor on-field performance as well as low overall attendance. Prior to the 2013 season, the Buffalo Bisons were assigned to the Toronto Blue Jays, who took over for the New York Mets as the team’s Major League Baseball affiliate. On April 18, 2013, the Bisons defeated the Syracuse Chiefs by a score of 27 runs on 29 hits, breaking the previous mark for the most runs and hits in an International League game (since 1973).

After the Bisons’ season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blue Jays took over Sahlen Field as their home field in 2020, spending $5 million to upgrade the facility. With Major League baseball’s restructure of Minor League Baseball and the demise of the International League, the Bisons will join the newly established Triple-A East in 2021, replacing the former International League. At their home games, they donned the Trenton Thunder outfits and were known as the Trenton Thunder. They were still referred to as the Buffalo Bisons when they were out on the road.
