Calgary Flames Biography and Career:

The Calgary Flames are a professional ice hockey club located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They compete in the Western Conference. They are a part of the National Hockey League’s Northwest Division, which is a division of the Western Conference (NHL). Following the Calgary Tigers (1921–27) and the Calgary Cowboys (1975–77), the club is the third major-professional ice hockey team to represent the city of Calgary.

The Calgary Flames are one of two NHL clubs based in Alberta, the other being the Edmonton Oilers, and they compete in the Western Conference. The closeness of the two cities has resulted in a well-known rivalry known as the Battle of Alberta. Games between the two sides are often tense affairs.

The club was originally known as the Atlanta Flames when it was created in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1972, and remained there until it relocated to Calgary in 1980. When the Calgary Flames were founded in 1976, they played their first three seasons in the Stampede Corral before relocating to their present home arena, the Scotiabank Saddledome (formerly known as the Olympic Saddledome), in 1983.

The Flames were the first Calgary club to play for the Stanley Cup since the Tigers of 1924 when they won it in 1986. The Flames won their first and only Stanley Cup in 1989, and it was their first and only championship. When the Calgary Flames made an unexpected run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004, it captivated the imagination of Canadians, prompting Prime Minister Paul Martin to refer to them as “Canada’s team,” and the Red Mile celebrations by Flames supporters became nationally renowned.

Besides their professional hockey team, the Flames own a Western Hockey League team, the Calgary Hitmen, and in 2007 they established a sports bar and entertainment center named Flames Central on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary. Since the franchise’s inception, the Flames have contributed more than $32 million to charitable organizations in the southern Alberta region via the Flames Foundation.

As part of their proposal to refurbish and name the Canadian Airlines Saddledome after the Calgary Flames, the Saddledome Foundation reached out to the Flames in 1994. The Flames accepted the idea and took over the administration of the stadium. When the board of directors agreed to this idea, they were bought out by the Flames for $20 million, as part of a 20-year arrangement with the club to operate the building.

The Flames agreed to a lease agreement with the expansion Calgary Hitmen of the junior Western Hockey League, which began play in 1995 and was partially owned by Theoren Fleury. The Flames were looking to fill additional dates at the Saddledome and reached an agreement with the Hitmen to fill those dates.

The Flames purchased the franchise two years later, in 1997, for a total of $1.5 million. After actively publicizing the Hitmen during the NHL lockout in 2004–05, the Flames surpassed all other professional or junior hockey teams in North America in attendance, with an average of more than 10,000 spectators each game during that season.

After announcing a hybrid restaurant, bar, and entertainment complex on Stephen Avenue in downtown Calgary in April 2006, the Flames stated that they will open the facility in May of that year. Flames President and CEO Ken King made the following statement when the partnership was announced: “While hockey continues to be our primary focus, we are continually looking for innovative ways to expand the Flames brand and provide our fans with more chances to enjoy the sport.

We feel that by developing a venue outside of the Pengrowth Saddledome where our supporters can come together to enjoy food, entertainment, and hockey, we will be able to bring them even closer to the team.” Flames Central officially opened its doors to the public a year later, in April 2007.

During the Calgary Flames’ journey to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004, the city of Calgary was transformed into a “non-stop celebration,” according to the Calgary Herald. During the first three rounds of the playoffs, as many as 35,000 spectators flocked to the 17th Avenue SW entertainment zone, which runs west from the Scotia Bank Saddledome, and over 60,000 people flocked to the district for the championship game.

The Red Mile celebration garnered extensive publicity in publications throughout North America because the parties were calm and disturbances were kept to a bare minimum despite the vast number of people congregating in a confined space.
