She was most well-known for her role as the smart but prickly and frequently unreasonable title character in the sitcom Murphy Brown 1988–98, 2018.

Bergen was born into one of the most prominent Hollywood families. Her mother was a professional model, and her father was the ventriloquist and radio comic Edgar Bergen. Both of her parents were in the entertainment industry. Candice had previously appeared on her father’s radio show when she was a little girl.

She attempted to enroll in the University of Pennsylvania but was ultimately kicked out after just two years of attendance. Bergen co-starred alongside Yves Montand in Claude Lelouch’s film Vivre pour vivre (1967; Live for Life) and appeared in the critically panned British film The Magus (1968), which was adapted from a book written by John Fowles. Following her fifth victory, she turned down any more nominations that were offered to her.
