Carly Rae Jepsen Biography and Career:

Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian singer and songwriter who was born on November 21, 1985. Jepsen studied musical theatre at the Canadian College of Performing Arts in Victoria, British Columbia. She was born and raised in Mission, British Columbia. She moved to Vancouver after completing her studies, where she participated in the fifth season of Canadian Idol in 2007 and finished third. Tug of War, Jepsen’s first studio album with folk influences, was released in Canada in 2008.

Jepsen’s big break occurred in 2012 when her single “Call Me Maybe”became a big hit with the general public. It was the best-selling single of the year and peaked at number one in 18 different countries. As a consequence, School Boy Records and Interscope Records signed her to a combined international record deal. Later that year, Kiss, Jepsen’s second studio album, was published. Reaching the top ten in both Canada and the US, it signalled a bigger transition into mainstream pop music and enjoyed moderate economic success.

Jepsen made her Broadway stage debut in 2014 as the lead in the film Cinderella. Her third studio album, Emotion, was released the following year. In addition to fusing dance-pop, synth-pop, and indie sensibilities, it is renowned for drawing inspiration from 1980s music. Even though it wasn’t as economically successful as Kiss, “I Really Like You,” the album’s lead single, was a hit and it got high praise from critics.

In addition to giving her voice to the animated movie Ballerina, Jepsen appeared in the television show Grease: Live in 2016. The release of her fourth studio album, Dedicated, on May 17, 2019, garnered favourable reviews from both reviewers and fans. A year later, Jepsen issued Dedicated Side B as a follow-up album.Three Juno Distinctions, a Billboard Music Award, an Allan Slaight Award, as well as nominations for Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, Polaris Music Prize, and People’s Choice Awards, are just a few of the many honours and awards that Jepsen has received.

Jepsen has sold over 25 million records globally as of May 2015. The second of their three children, Jepsen was born to Alexandra Lanzarotta and Larry Jepsen in Mission, British Columbia.  Axel Jepsen, her great-grandfather by paternal line, was born in Denmark’s Aarhus in 1898. Colin, his older brother, and Katie, his younger sister, are Jepsen’s siblings. She attended Heritage Park Secondary School and pursued her love of musical theatre by taking on the lead parts of Annie, Sandy Olsson, and Dorothy Gale in student productions of Annie, Grease, and The Wiz.

Since both of Jepsen’s parents and stepparents were educators, she also gave teaching music as a profession some thought. She submitted applications to a number of music-related courses at universities like Capilano University and the University of British Columbia. Beverly Holmes, her high school acting instructor, convinced her to go to an audition at the Victoria, British Columbia-based Canadian College of Performing Arts.

She was one of 25 female students accepted into its one-year programme: “After that school, as much fun as I had, it was very evident to me that I really did want to pursue more of a purely musical career rather than acting and all the dancing.” Jepsen moved to Vancouver’s west side after graduating and had the good fortune to work at various different occupations. She began Trees Organic Coffee’s open mic night while working there as a barista and pastry chef assistant.

Jepsen calls this period “the happiest time of her life,” during which she “played many nights a week in musician-friendly holes in the wall,” slept on a pull-out sofa, wrote songs on a guitar her parents gave her in her free time, and slept on top of a pull-out sofa. Before the two of them worked together, Jepsen, a bartender at the Media Club, asked for an extra-late shift so that she might see Sia.

Jepsen was persuaded to try out for Canadian Idol by her theatre teacher as she was putting together a swing band. She sang her own song, “Sweet Talker,” and came in third place, which she thought was the finest result possible in hindsight: “It was like all the publicity without the terrible contract at the end.”Jonathan Simkin, a music manager, was drawn to her demo tape and offered Jepsen a management deal with 604 Records that year.

In June 2008, Jepsen debuted with “Sunshine on My Shoulders,” a version of the John Denver classic.Tug of War, her self-titled debut album, was released in September 2008 and achieved 10,000 copies sold in Canada. The singles “Tug of War” and “Bucket,” which each sold 40,000 units, reached the top 40 of the Canadian Hot 100 and were awarded Gold certifications.

The final single was “Sour Candy,” a duet by Josh Ramsay of Marianas Trench. Together with Marianas Trench and Shiloh, Jepsen toured western Canada in 2009. 2011 saw Jepsen team up with “Call Me Maybe” co-writer Tavish Crow to record songs for her second album alongside Josh Ramsay, Ryan Stewart, and others. September of that year saw the release of the song “Call Me Maybe.”

A viral video in which Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Carlos Pena from Big Time Rush, and Ashley Tisdale lip-synced and danced to the song was released in February 2012, thanks to the promotion of the song on Twitter by fellow Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber. Jepsen was given a worldwide record deal by Scooter Braun, the manager of Justin Bieber, which included both Interscope Records and Schoolboy Records.

Later, “Call Me Maybe” reached its highest point at the top of the Canadian Hot 100, making Jepsen the fourth Canadian artist to hold that position. Billboard magazine named the song “Song of the Summer” after it spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. The song also topped the charts in 18 other nations, including the UK, where it was the second-best-selling single of the year.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry reports that it was the best-selling single globally in 2012. (IFPI). Prior to the release of Jepsen’s second album, Kiss, in September 2012, the song hit the top ten of the charts in Australia, the UK, and the US, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The album is recognised as gold in Canada. “This Kiss” and “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” were other singles from the album.
