Carolina Hurricanes Biography and Career:
The Raleigh-based Carolina Hurricanes are a professional ice hockey team in North Carolina. They are members of the National Hockey League’s Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference (NHL). The Hurricanes play their home games in the PNC Arena, which seats 18,680 fans. As part of the NHL–WHA merger in 1979, the Hartford Whalers have renamed the New England Whalers and became the Hartford Whalers. The club moved to North Carolina in 1997 and won its first Stanley Cup four games to three against the Edmonton Oilers during the 2005–06 season.
The World Hockey Association (WHA) granted the New England Whalers a franchise in November 1971 to begin to play in Boston, Massachusetts. The club’s first two years were spent in the Boston Arena and Boston Garden. Due to the growing difficulties of arranging games at Boston Garden, the team’s owners chose to relocate to Hartford, Connecticut, starting with the 1974–75 season.

The next season, the team won the Adams Division, only to lose in six games to the Nordiques in the first round of the playoffs. The Whalers reached the playoffs for the last time in 1992 but were eliminated in seven games by the Canadiens in the first round.
In addition to multiple members of senior management and the coaching staff, the club brought with it announcers Chuck Kaiton, John Forslund, and Tripp Tracy as well as equipment managers Wally Tatomir, Skip Cunningham, and Bob Gorman from the Whalers organization. Finally, the Hartford Civic Center’s original goal horn is still in use at PNC Arena.
The 2010–11 season was largely anticipated to be a transitional year away from the veteran-heavy, a high-salary team that debuted in 2009–10 and toward a younger, more affordable basis. The Carolina Hurricanes sacked coach Paul Maurice in December 2011 and hired Kirk Muller. Gleason’s contract was extended by the Carolina Hurricanes on February 20, 2012, while Ruutu’s contract was extended two days later, on February 22, by four years and $19 million.
The Carolina Hurricanes announced two months later that they had signed Jiri Tlusty to a two-year agreement for $1.5 million in 2012–13 and $1.7 million in 2013–14. The Carolina Hurricanes traded Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin, and their 2012 first-round selection pick (Derrick Pouliot) to the Penguins at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Jordan Staal, reuniting him with his elder brother, Eric Staal.
Alexander Semin signed a five-year, $35 million agreement with the Hurricanes on March 25, 2013. However, the club finished third in the Southeast Division and thirteenth in the Eastern Conference during the lockout-shortened 2012–13 season, missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
The Hurricanes were reorganized into the new Metropolitan Division before the 2013–14 season. The squad finished last in the Metropolitan Division and missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season in 2014–15. The squad finished sixth in the division in 2015–16 after team captain Eric Staal was dealt with the New York Rangers before the trade deadline. In the 2016–17 season, the Hurricanes finished seventh in the division, missing the playoffs for the eighth straight season.
In December 2017, it was revealed that the team’s controlling stake will be sold to Dallas, Texas investor Tom Dundon after the signing of a purchase agreement. The club will remain in Raleigh, North Carolina after the sale, putting an end to concerns over the franchise’s probable relocation. Tom Dundon became the leader of the club in January 2018.
