Charles Leclerc Biography and Career:

Because of his championship victories in GP3 and Formula Two, Charles Leclerc was an obvious candidate for a Formula One seat with Sauber in the next season. Jules Bianchi, a boyhood buddy, arranged for him to have his first karting ride. Leclerc, the younger of the two by seven years, had comparable abilities behind the wheel and followed in the footsteps of his buddy into Formula One.

In 2009, Leclerc became the youngest-ever winner of France’s cadet karting championship, beating out competitors as young as seven years old. Two years later, Nicolas Todt, the manager of Bianchi, signed Leclerc to a contract. This was a watershed moment, since Leclerc believed his family would have been able to continue to support him if Todt had not come to his rescue.

He went on to have considerable success on the world scene, albeit he came up just short of winning numerous major championships in the process. The following year, he finished as runner-up in both the European KF2 series and the under 18 world championships. The next year, he was defeated by Max Verstappen to win the KZ1 world championship. Despite this, Leclerc shown considerable talent and was ready to go to the level of racing vehicles. Leclerc took lesser stages up the Formula One ladder than Verstappen, who went directly into F3.

Leclerc made a name for himself as a rookie in the 2014 Formula Renault ALPS championship, where he competed against drivers such as George Russell and McLaren youngster Nyck de Vries, the latter of whom was racing in his third season in the division. De Vries won the championship by one point over Leclerc, who had won the race twice at Monza.
When the series landed in Jerez, Spain, for the final round, the championship had already been decided, according to the official results. A calamity occured during the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, where Bianchi was competing for Marussia on the same weekend as the accident. Bianchi was involved in a car accident and had significant brain injuries. He remained in a coma for nine months before succumbing to his injuries in July of the following year.

Despite his distress, Leclerc said that the loss of his boyhood buddy had never forced him to question if his future lay in racing. With incredible poise only a few days after his 17th birthday, Leclerc finished third in the last race, earning him a place on the podium. With wildcard appearances in the more competitive Eurocup series, where he finished second at Spa and second at the Nurburgring, Leclerc had also garnered some notice.

For the 2015 season, Leclerc advanced to the next level of competition, this time against numerous more experienced opponents. He replaced Verstappen in the Van Amersfoort race of the European Formula Three championship on Sunday. Russell, who was racing for Carlin, and future Formula One driver Lance Stroll, who was driving for Prema, were among his fellow rookies.

Following their collision in the first race of the season at Silverstone, Leclerc pursued his adversary to the finish line in the second race at the same venue. In the last race of the weekend, Leclerc claimed his maiden F3 win, and it seemed as if a championship challenge was in the works.

Leclerc’s potential was highlighted with an outstanding performance in the third race at Hockenheim. He fought a dramatic fight against the highly experienced championship favourite Felix Rosenqvist to claim the victory. This placed Leclerc in second place in the points standings, a position he maintained following the third round at Pau, despite a pair of shaky starts in the first two rounds.

After a few rounds, the driving standards in the championship became a big discussion topic among the fans. Stroll was killed in a tragic collision at Monza, while other mishaps led to the cancellation of one race altogether. The dispute continued in Spa, when Stroll was given a one-race suspension for intentionally knocking Rosenqvist out of the race. Racing from sixth to first in the weekend’s first race, Leclerc managed to avoid getting into any serious danger. Leclerc’s second-place finish in race three gave him the championship lead for the first time.

At the Norisring, he maintained his points lead by winning the first race on the short street track in heavy rain and finishing the next two races in the top four of the standings. Antonio Giovinazzi, his closest competitor, was now 42 points behind him. However, his season was about to take a turn for the worst. After finishing on the podium in 13 of the first 17 races, he was unable to place in the top three in any of the remaining races over the balance of the season.

Following contact with Stroll at Zandvoort (which was declared a racing incident), he suffered a severe crash, which placed him on the defensive. He finished ninth in the last race with his repaired vehicle, but Giovinazzi had taken over the lead in the championship points standings.

It was then that Rosenqvist found his groove. With his victory in Portugal, the Prema driver seized the lead in the championship points standings and went on to win five races in a row to claim the title. Jake Dennis knocked Leclerc down to fourth place in the rankings, but he still finished the year as the top rookie in a competitive field of competitors.
