Chicago White Sox Biography and Career:

In addition to being known as the South Siders, the Chicago White Sox is an American professional baseball team based in Chicago that competes in the American League (AL). The White Sox have won three World Series championships, two in the early 1900s (1906 and 1917) and the third 88 years later, in 2005 when they defeated the New York Yankees. When they play in Chicago, they are sometimes referred to as “South Siders,” which refers to their geographic location in respect to the Cubs (the city’s other big-league franchise).

Formerly known as the Sioux City Cornhuskers, the White Sox were created as a minor league franchise in 1894 and have played their home games in Chicago since then. It was purchased by Charles Comiskey at the end of the inaugural season and relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota, where it continues to play today. Chicago’s franchise relocated to Chicago in 1900, and the newly renamed American League was elevated to major league status the next year, with Chicago winning the league’s inaugural championship the following year. It wasn’t until 1904 that the Chicago White Stockings earned their current moniker after changing their name from the White Stockings of New York.

After the team’s appearance in the 1919 World Series, in which Chicago players colluded to manipulate the game in favor of the underdog Cincinnati Reds, the team’s reputation was forever tainted. Eight members of the club, including outfielder Shoeless Joe Jackson, were later identified as having gambling links, according to the investigation. In what became known as the Black Sox Scandal, evidence proved that the men had purposely lost the World Series in eight games, earning them suspensions and hurting the reputation of the team and the sport as a result of their actions.

Following the scandal, the White Sox struggled for the next 86 seasons, winning just one American League pennant—in 1959 with a hustling club nicknamed “the Go-Go Sox”—though they did win a division championship in 1983 with a bunch of players who were dubbed “the Ugly Ones.”  After signing Carlton Fisk, an 11-time all-star (four of them with the White Sox) and one of the finest catchers in baseball history, the Red Sox won the World Series in 1981. Frank Thomas was a first baseman for the organization for 16 years, during which time he won back-to-back American League Most Valuable Player titles in 1993 and 1994.

As manager of the Chicago White Sox, Ozzie Guillen guided a seasoned squad to an unexpected World Series championship in 2005, the team’s first World Series championship since 1917. When the Chicago White Sox returned to the postseason in 2008, they were unable to go beyond the first round of the playoffs. The team finished no higher than second in its division in any of the following three seasons, and growing tensions between Guillen and the team’s administration led to his departure from his contract just before the end of the 2011 season.

A lengthy rebuilding period followed, during which the White Sox consistently finished towards the bottom of their respective divisional standings from that point on until the end of their respective decade. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to shorten the 2020 season, Chicago posted its first winning season since 2008 and returned to the playoffs after an 11-year hiatus, the franchise achieved its first winning season since 2008.

The team, however, was defeated by the Oakland Athletics in the Wild Card Series. During the off-season, Tony La Russa returned to the team as a manager for a second time. It was the second consecutive season in which Chicago won 93 games and finished atop the Central Division standings. It made it to the American League Division Series but was ousted by the Houston Astros in five games.
