Christian Bale Biography and Career:
Christian Charles Philip Bale was born on January 30, 1974, in Pembrokeshire, Wales, to Jennifer “Jenny” (James) and David Bale, both of whom were born in England. Mother: A circus performer; Father: A commercial pilot from South Africa. During Bale’s upbringing, the family moved about a lot, living in places including England, Portugal, and the United States. As Bale admits, he made his career choice partly because of the uncertainty of the job market.
In 1983, he appeared in a cereal commercial; the following year, he debuted on the West End stage in “The Nerd”. Steven Spielberg was drawn to Bale’s performance in the 1986 NBC miniseries Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna (1986), which led to his well-known part in Empire of the Sun (1987). He received a special award from the National Board of Review for Best Performance by a Juvenile Actor for his performance as the star of the military epic.
Henry V (1989) and Treasure Island (1990) were two of Bale’s first big roles when he had to deal with popularity and the attention he received early on (he considered quitting acting) (1990). Bale became one of the most well-known online celebrities by the end of the decade, but he remained largely a private, tabloid-free celebrity with only a few significant exceptions.
Bale ushered in the new decade as the lead in Mary Harron’s adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel American Psycho (2000). For his role in the film, Bale played a Wall Street CEO who was obsessed with his own physical appearance. According to “Entertainment Weekly’s 10th Anniversary Issue,” Bale is among the “Top 8 Most Powerful Cult Figures” of the past decade, due to his Internet cult status. Both Entertainment Weekly and Premiere magazine named Christian Bale one of the “Hottest Leading Men Under 30.”
When Bale first came to Hollywood’s attention, he appeared in the remakes of Shaft (2000) and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (2001), as well as the hot and humid Laurel Canyon (2002) and the commercial misfire Reign of Fire (2002), which has its fair number of defenders. Bale went on to star in two more cult classics, Equilibrium (2002) and The Machinist (2004), the latter of which was notable for Bale’s dramatic weight loss for the character of a lathe operator who had been plagued by insomnia for over a year.
Batman Begins (2005), Christopher Nolan’s ultimate trilogy, established that a dark-themed tale could appeal to viewers around the world because of Bale’s ability to morph his body and to disappear into a character. When Warner Bros. decided to retire the character following a string of disappointing returns, they decided to resuscitate him in this picture (1997). As a result of the death of his father in late 2003, Bale decided to take on the role, which was a personal achievement for him.
Bale transitioned from Batman to two indie films: The New World (2005) and Harsh Times (2007). (2005). Rescue Dawn (2006), Werner Herzog’s feature-length adaptation of his earlier Emmy-nominated documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly, was his next collaboration with a respected independent director (1997). In the years leading up to the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Christian Bale appeared in the remake of 3:10 to Yuma and the experimental Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, all directed by Todd Haynes (2007).
Heath Ledger, whose portrayal of The Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight Rises became a high point of the sequel, died suddenly in 2007, raising the stakes for the film’s release. Actor Christian Bale’s eloquent words to the media brought back memories of a bygone era when Hollywood stars were more sophisticated than they are today. Next, Bale took on the character of John Connor in the Schwarzenegger-less Terminator Salvation (2009), and then played federal agent Melvin Purvis in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies (2010).
Both films were well-received, but not as big as predicted. The Fighter (2010) was a critical and economic success for actor Christian Bale, and he would go on to win his first Academy Award in 2011. As Dicky Eklund (Mark Wahlberg’s brother and trainer), Bale won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in the film. Bale once again demonstrated his ability to morph into a gaunt, skeleton form. The Flowers of War (2011), in which Bale played a priest caught in the middle of the Rape of Nanking, was directed by Yimou Zhang, a director with whom Bale has previously worked.
Bale’s effort to see Chen Guangcheng, a Chinese civil-rights activist, was rejected by the Chinese government, making headlines. In the wake of the Aurora, Colorado tragedy, Bale made a private trek to the state to talk with survivors of the attack that left theatergoers dead and injured, capping his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Dark Knight Rises (2012).
Along with Crazy Heart (2009) director Scott Cooper’s thriller Out of the Furnace (2013), he also appeared in the comedy-drama American Hustle (2013), reuniting with actor David O. Russell. Both Knight of Cups (2015) and an untitled drama, starring Christian Bale, will be directed by Terrence Malick, the man behind 2005’s The New World. He spends a lot of time volunteering for organizations like Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Foundation in his spare time. His wife, Sibi Blazic, and their two children reside at their home.
