Ciarán Hinds Biography and Career:

Ciarán Hinds is an Irish character actor who has been working for many years. Throughout his four-decade career, he has amassed over one hundred credits in films and television shows. Hinds was raised in a Catholic family in Belfast, where she acquired an early interest in dance throughout her childhood. Hinds is a native of Belfast. He started to have a career in law but later changed his focus to acting. He started his professional career on stage after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he had been trained in the discipline.

Cinderella, performed at Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre in 1976, was his debut in the theatre. He first appeared on the big screen for the first time in 1977, when he appeared in an episode of the historical television series “Out of the Past.” In the 1981 fantasy adventure picture “Excalibur,” he appeared on the big screen. In the years that have followed, Hinds has given memorable performances of various characters across all three forms of the performing arts.

He has been honored with a significant number of honors, such as the Career Achievement Award at the 2010 Dublin International Blockbuster Festival and two Behind the Voice Actors Awards in 2014 for his work as a member of the voice ensemble in the animated blockbuster ‘Frozen’ which was released in 2013.Ciarán Hinds is the son of Moya Hinds, an amateur actor, and Gerry Hinds, a doctor and educator. He was born on February 9, 1953, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His father is also a schoolteacher.

Caitriona, Bronagh, Gerardine, and Moya are his four sisters. His other sister’s name is Moya. The family identified as Catholic and maintained a home in North Belfast. When Hinds was still a child, he began training in dance. He received his education at Holy Family Primary School and continued his studies at St. Malachy’s College. Initially, he planned to work in the legal field, so he enrolled at Queen’s University in Belfast to get his law degree. Despite this, he eventually realized that acting was his genuine vocation in life. After that, he decided to pursue a career in acting and enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, from where he ultimately received his diploma in 1975.

Ciarán Hinds made his theatrical debut in ‘Cinderella’ in 1976. Beginning in the late 1970s and mid 1980s, he was frequently present in various performances at Citizens’ Theatre. He had stints with the Abbey Theatre, the Field Day Theatre Company, the Druid Theatre, the Lyric Players’ Theatre, and the Project Arts Centre when he was in Ireland.

He was cast as Ashwattaman in Peter Brook’s production of ‘The Mahabharata in 1987. The French drama that was first produced in 1985 and based on the Sanskrit epic ‘Mahabharata’ ran for nine hours. It was limited to six hours to fit within a TV miniseries, but it was expanded to around three hours for theatrical release and the DVD. Additionally, Hinds has maintained a relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Hinds won the Theatre World Award for Best Debut in New York in 1999 and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Special Achievement for his portrayal as Larry in the London and Broadway versions of Patrick Marber’s “Closer.” These awards were presented to Hinds for his work in both performances. Other notable theatre credits include ‘The Yalta Game’ (2001), ‘The Seafarer (2007-08), and ‘The Birds (2009), all of which he has performed in.

After making his debut in the film ‘Excalibur’ (1981), Ciarán Hinds went on to star in the drama film ‘December Bride (1991), the romance drama ‘Circle of Friends (1995), and the French-Italian erotic thriller ‘Il tempo dell Amore (1999). Hinds appeared in the same scene as Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Jude Law, and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the crime drama “Road to Perdition,” released in 2002.

In the 2005 historical drama ‘Munich’ directed by Steven Spielberg, he portrayed the role of Carl, a former Israeli soldier who worked as a cleaner. In the biographical drama picture, ‘There Will Be Blood’ directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and released in 2007, he collaborated with Daniel Day-Lewis. Hinds had a performance as Aberforth Dumbledore, the brother of Albus Dumbledore, in the last installment of the Harry Potter film series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2,” which was released in 2011.

In the Cold War espionage thriller ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier espionage’ from 2011, he was cast as Roy Bland (also known as “Soldier”). Hinds provided his voice for the role of Grand Pabbie, the troll king, in the viral 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film ‘Frozen’ produced by Disney. In the live-action superhero movie “Justice League” (2017), he also provided the voice for the film’s primary nemesis, Steppenwolf. It has been announced that he will be in the next comedy movie, “The Thin Man.”

After making his debut on television in an episode of ‘Out of the Past’ in 1977, Hinds starred in the movie ‘The Long March’ in 1980. Hinds played the role of John Stacey in the television miniseries ‘Seaforth’ that aired in 1994. In the BBC television drama series ‘Cold Lazarus’ (1996), which consisted of four episodes, he portrayed the role of Fyodor. Gaius Julius Caesar appeared in 13 episodes of the HBO series ‘Rome’ played by Hinds during 2005 and 2007.

Hinds gave what is his best cinematic performance ever by bringing out the role’s innate charm, bravura, and political brilliance. He also expertly and quietly revealed his inability to compromise, ultimately leading to his undoing and eventually contributing to his fall from power. He is most known for his roles as DCS James Langton in ITV’s “Above Suspicion” (2009–2012), Bud Hammond in USA Network’s miniseries “Political Animals” (2012), Mance Rayder in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” (2013–2015), and Walter in BBC Studios’ “MotherFatherSon” (2019).
