Claudette Colvin Biography and Career:

Claudette Colvin is an American civil rights pioneer who worked as a nurse’s aide before retiring. She was active in the movement during the 1950s. In the United States, on September 5, 1939, she was given the name Claudette Austin at the time of her birth. She was taken into custody on March 2, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, when she was only 15 years old because she refused to give up her seat on a crowded, segregated bus to a white woman. This led to her arrest. The occurrence of this event took place on March 2nd, 1955.

This event took place nine months before the more well-known incident that helped spark the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, which was led by Rosa Parks, who was the secretary of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People at the time (NAACP). Colvin was one of the five plaintiffs in the first case brought before a federal court to challenge the practice of segregation on public transportation in the city.

Fred Gray, a lawyer who specializes in civil rights law, was the one who initially initiated the legal action that would become known as Browder v. Gayle and was presented to the court on February 1, 1956. In a district court in the United States, she testified in front of a panel of three judges who were presiding over the case at the time. On June 13, 1956, the judges in Alabama made the decision that the state and local laws that required segregation on buses were unconstitutional and struck them down.

The decision that had been made by the district court was appealed by the state, and on November 13, 1956, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the district court and upheld its decision. After a period of one month had passed, the Supreme Court came to the conclusion that it would be appropriate to uphold the order that would put an end to bus segregation in Montgomery and throughout the state of Alabama.

After a few months, it was decided to lift the boycott of the Montgomery buses and resume service. The pioneering work done by Colvin was hidden from the view of the general public for a significant amount of time by Montgomery’s black community leaders.
