Cleveland Indians Biography and Career:

The Cleveland Indians are an American professional baseball team based in Cleveland that competes in the American League (National League) (AL). The Indians have won six American League pennants and two World Series championships, the first of which came in 1920 and the second of which came in 1948. The Cleveland Indians were founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as a minor league baseball team before relocating to Cleveland in 1900. The Cleveland Bluebirds, sometimes known as the Blues, were a minor league baseball team that was raised to major league status in 1901.

In 1902, they were renamed the Cleveland Bronchos, and the following year, they adopted the nickname “Naps” in honor of their new star player, Nap Lajoie, who had joined the team. In 1915, the franchise’s owner, Charles Somers, requested that local newspapers choose a new name for the establishment, and the moniker “Indians” was selected. Tris Speaker, who led the Indians to their first World Series championship in 1920, was acquired by the team in a trade-in in 1916. The Indians did not return to the postseason for another 28 years, but their return was a highlight of the season. One of five future Hall of Famers on the 1948 Indians was shortstop-manager Lou Boudreau, who was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player that year and was the team’s captain.

Another was outfielder Larry Doby, who was the first African-American to play in the American League, and three pitchers: Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and Satchel Paige, a 42-year-old rookie who was a former star of the Negro League. (In 1975, the Indians hired Frank Robinson, who became the first African-American manager in the major leagues.) Following a tie finish to the regular season in 1948, the Indians faced off against the Boston Red Sox, whom they eventually defeated in the first one-game playoff in major league history. The Cleveland Indians then defeated the Boston Braves in six games to win their second World Series championship.

Even though the Indians won 111 games in 1954, they were swept by the New York Giants in a World Series that featured one of baseball’s most iconic images, Willie Mays’s over-the-shoulder catch of Indian Vic Wertz’s towering drive to deep center field in the first game of the series. In the years that followed, the Indians fell into a protracted era of mediocrity, finishing with a losing record in 27 of the 34 seasons between 1960 and 1993.

A popular legend attributes this period to the “curse of Rocky Colavito,” which was visited upon the Indians in 1960 after the team traded Colavito, the American League’s leading home-run hitter, to the Detroit Tigers in 1959 in exchange for Harvey Kuenn, who had led the league in batting averages at the time of the trade. The Indians resurrected under manager Mike Hargrove and won five consecutive American League Central Division titles (1995–99), advancing to the World Series on two occasions during that span (the Indians lost in both World Series appearances).

Shortly after the end of that streak, the team’s overall performance started to deteriorate. When comparing the years 2002 to 2012, Cleveland had only two winning seasons, but one of those seasons (2007, when the Indians lost in seven games to the eventual champion Red Sox in the American League Championship Series). In 2013, the Indians, under new manager Terry Francona, improved on their previous season’s record of 24 victories and made an unexpected trip to the postseason, where they were defeated in a one-game Wild Card playoff. When the Indians won the division title three years later, they had overcome a spate of pitching ailments to their starting rotation.

With the help of Francona’s excellent management of his weakened roster, Cleveland went on to lose just one game during the American League playoffs on their way to their second consecutive appearance in the World Series, where they were defeated by the Chicago Cubs in a dramatic seven-game series. In 2017, Cleveland was victorious in yet another divisional championship. The Indians went on a modern-era Major League Baseball-record 22-game winning run as a result of their efforts, but their season came to an end in heartbreak when they were defeated in the first round of the playoffs by the Chicago Cubs.

The Indians earned their third consecutive division title in 2018, although they were defeated in the first round of the postseason for the second year in a row. After finishing second in the divisional playoffs last season, Cleveland’s three-year postseason streak came to a close. Many films have been made on the Indians throughout the years, including The Kid from Cleveland (1949), Major League (1989), and The Kid from Cleveland (1949). Bob Hope was also a part-owner of the team for a brief spell in the 1950s.
