Columbus Blue Jackets Biography and Career:

The Columbus Blue Jackets are a professional ice hockey club headquartered in the city of Columbus, Ohio, in the state of Ohio, United States of America. They are a member of the National Hockey League’s Central Division of the Western Conference, where they play in the NHL.

The Columbus Chill of the ECHL was the club that came before the Blue Jackets when they were established as an expansion franchise in Ohio’s capital in 2000. They have never placed higher than third in their division in any of their seven seasons, and they are the only current NHL club to have never qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The name and logos of the Blue Jackets are derived from the state’s strong Civil War heritage. They’ve had Ken Hitchcock as their head coach since late 2006, and current general manager Scott Howson has been with the organization since 2007. The Blue Jackets play their home games at Nationwide Arena, which was built in downtown Columbus and opened its doors in 2000.

Following the departure of the Cleveland Barons in 1978, Ohio’s hockey fans had to wait 22 years before another NHL franchise came to town. Columbus, along with a number of other cities, submitted an application for expansion in 1997. The people of Columbus were debating whether to approve a referendum to construct a publicly funded arena, which would be a crucial step toward acceptance of the city’s NHL proposal.

When NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman traveled to Columbus to speak with community leaders about the proposed franchise, there was some fear that the referendum might fail to get enough support. The local leaders informed Bettman that if the vote failed, they would not be prepared to foot the tab for the team’s travel expenses. However, shortly after the meeting ended, John H. McConnell (one of the individuals who had joined the offer) personally assured Bettman that an arena would be constructed, referendum or not.

When the May vote failed, Columbus’ chances for a successful candidacy for the World Cup were dashed. But on May 31, 1997, the company Nationwide stated that it would fund the $150 million arenas. Following that, on June 25, 1997, the National Hockey League announced that Columbus would be receiving a new franchise.

The NHL Expansion Draft was place in Calgary, Alberta, on June 23, 2000. The two newest clubs in the league, the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild, were selected in the first round. According to the rules of the draught, 26 of the NHL’s current 28 clubs were permitted to protect one goalie, five defenseman, and nine forwards, or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards depending on the situation.

Due to the fact that they were the two newest clubs, having been in existence for one and two years, respectively, the Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators both had their entire rosters preserved. In order to make their first 24 picks, the Blue Jackets and the Wild had to choose three goaltenders, eight defenders, and thirteen forwards between them. Their last two selections might be players from any position on the field.

Doug MacLean, the organization’s first general manager and president, was sacked on April 18, 2007, after nine years and six seasons in charge, during which the team failed to qualify for the playoffs. Vice President of Blue Jackets parent business JMAC, Inc. Mike Priest was appointed President of the team, and Assistant General Manager Jim Clark functioned as General Manager until the Blue Jackets hired Edmonton Oilers Assistant General Manager Scott Howson as their new general manager on June 15.

When the Columbus Blue Jackets announced their affiliation with the Elmira Jackals on October 4, 2007, they were replacing their previous connection with the Dayton Bombers as the club’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Starting with a 4-0 shutout against the reigning Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks in the opening game of the 2007-2008 season, the Jackets had one of their finest starts in team history. It was Hitchcock’s first full season as head coach of the club.

On February 26, 2008, however, with the Blue Jackets and the Colorado Avalanche failing to come to terms on a new contract and amid considerable controversy, Blue Jackets captain Adam Foote sought and was granted a trade to the Avalanche. In exchange, the Jackets got a pair of conditional draught selections.

On March 12, 2008, former Blue Jackets first-round draught selection Rick Nash was named the team’s new captain, replacing the outgoing captain. The Blue Jackets managed to post their greatest season record to date, remaining above.500 until the very last game of the season, and finished fourth in the Central Division with 80 points. On July 9, 2008, the Blue Jackets announced that they had extended Hitchcock’s contract by three years, allowing him to continue as head coach.
