Conan O’Brien Biography and Career:

On April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States, Conan Christopher O’Brien was born. He is best known as the host of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (1993–2009), The Tonight Show (2009–10), and Conan (2010–21), among other late-night talk-show appearances. In his family of six children, O’Brien was the third child; his mother worked as a lawyer, and his father was a physician who also taught at Harvard Medical School.

When he was a child, he showed a strong interest in entertainment and comedy, and he attended tap dancing lessons and created comedic plays. Upon graduating from high school, O’Brien went on to study at Harvard University, where he majored in American history and literature. The Harvard Lampoon, the school’s famed comedy magazine, published his writings, and in 1983–84 he was chosen president of the magazine for an unprecedented two consecutive years, a record at the time.

When he graduated with honours from Harvard in 1985, O’Brien relocated to Los Angeles and joined the writing staff of Not Necessarily the News, a successful news-show spoof that was broadcast on HBO. He wrote for the show for two years and performed with a number of improvisational ensembles, including The Groundlings, during that time.  In 1989, O’Brien and other writers from Saturday Night Live were honoured with an Emmy Award.

Following his departure from Saturday Night Live in 1991, O’Brien joined the writing crew of The Simpsons, a popular animated television series about an eccentric suburban family. O’Brien’s unique blend of sarcasm and silliness contributed significantly to the show’s popularity, and he eventually rose to the position of supervising producer. In 1993, after David Letterman relocated his late-night talk show to CBS, NBC hired O’Brien to fill the resulting time gap vacated by Letterman.

In September 1993, the premiere of Late Night with Conan O’Brien was met with a surge of negative coverage in the news media. It was inevitable that O’Brien would be compared to Letterman, and his inexperience and uneasiness in his new role were clearly visible on camera. In response to negative reviews, NBC began to hand out one-year contracts to the show’s cast members, sparking suspicion that the show might be cancelled.

O’Brien, on the other hand, gradually built himself a loyal following. Conan O’Brien hosted Late Night with Conan O’Brien, which had the traditional look of a late-night talk show—with O’Brien behind a desk, sidekick Andy Richter (who stayed on with the show until 2000) assisting with his jokes, and a hip band, led by Max Weinberg (drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band), playing in the background—but O’Brien was just as irreverent and silly as Letterman.

In addition to such regular comic segments as “Audience Hygiene,” “Classic Films Dubbed by Children,” and “Clutch Cargo,” in which O’Brien “interviewed” celebrities whose faces flashed on a screen with moving lips superimposed, O’Brien also performed stand-up routines and performed stand-up comedy. Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog, a puppet played by Robert Smigel, was also a hit with audiences.

The show has been nominated for multiple Emmys, and in 2007 it was awarded one for writing. In 2004, Jay Leno, the long-time host of The Tonight Show, revealed that he would be departing the talk show in 2009, and Conan O’Brien was picked to take over as host. The final edition of Late Night with Conan O’Brien aired in February 2009, and O’Brien took over as host of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in June, with Richter once again by his side.

In contrast, the Tonight Show presented by Conan O’Brien suffered in the ratings, and talk began to circulate in January 2010 that Leno might return to the programme. The ensuing drama was heightened by monologue fights between late-night comedians, who fired jabs at NBC as well as at each other during their sets. After a series of contentious discussions with NBC, O’Brien stepped down as host of The Tonight Show in late January and was replaced by Jay Leno.

Because of the rules of his contract with NBC, O’Brien was legally barred from appearing on television for six months. As a result, he started on a live comedy tour in April, which was captured for the documentary Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (2011). As the host of the late-night talk shows Conan on the cable network TBS, he made his comeback to late-night television in November 2010. As a result of dwindling ratings, the hour-long show was reduced to 30 minutes in 2019, and Conan was cancelled two years after that.

During this period, he launched the well-received podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, which debuted in 2018. In addition to hosting his talk shows, O’Brien has acted in a number of television episodes and films, frequently in the role of his own character. With his voice, he has appeared in a variety of animated productions, including the 2017 film The LEGO Batman Movie, in which he played a famous Batman villain named the Riddler.
