Craig Bellamy Biography and Career:

In his playing career, Craig Douglas Bellamy (born 13 July 1979) was a forward for the Welsh national football team. He is currently a pundit for the British television network BT Sport.

Bellamy, who was born in Cardiff, began his professional footballing career with Norwich City. On to Coventry City and Newcastle United, before spending a half-season on loan at Celtic in 2005. Later that year, he returned to the Premier League, where he played for clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, West Ham United, and Manchester City.

For the 2010–11 season, Bellamy dropped down to the Championship from the Premier League in order to play on loan for his boyhood club, Cardiff City, for the duration of the season. The following season, he returned to his former club Liverpool for a brief stint before settling permanently in Cardiff. Later, he guided Cardiff City to the Premier League, the first time the club had played in the top division in more than 50 years. The goal he scored for Cardiff marked his seventh goal for a different team, making him the first player in Premier League history to accomplish this feat.

He was a four-time champion in the Championship, as well as the League Cup, the Scottish Cup, and the Community Shield during his playing career. In addition, he finished second in the FA Cup and the Champions League. Despite criticism for his behaviour on and off the field, he has amassed millions of pounds for charity and helped to establish a football academy in Sierra Leone, where he is now based.

He made his senior international debut for Wales in 1998, and over the next fifteen years he earned a total of 78 caps for his country, scoring 19 goals in the process. He served as the captain of Wales from 2007 to 2011, when he was forced to step down due to injuries he sustained. Following the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, Bellamy announced his retirement from international football. A part of the Great Britain Olympic squad in the 2012 London Olympics, he appeared five times and scored a goal in the process.

Bellamy started his footballing career with Bristol Rovers when he was nine years old, and he spent two years with the club before being recruited into the Norwich City junior system as a teenager. He made his professional debut for Norwich City on 15 March 1997, coming in as an injury-time replacement in a 2–0 loss to Crystal Palace in the First Division. He went on to make two more substitute appearances for the Canaries before the season’s conclusion.

On 12 August 1997, he made his first professional start in the first round of the League Cup against Barnet, and he made his first league start on 20 September against Manchester City, both against the same opponent. In a 2–2 tie with Bury at home on November 1st, he scored his first goal, which was the opening goal. He received his first career red card on 7 February 1998, a straight red card in the 23rd minute against Manchester City, yet he ended up with 13 goals in his debut season of professional football.

Against Queens Park Rangers on August 22, 1998, Bellamy scored his first hat-trick of his professional career, a 4–2 victory for his team. In December 1998, Bellamy suffered a left knee injury as a result of a tackle from Wolves defender Kevin Muscat, and he was sidelined for two months as a result. During a pre-season match in the summer of 1999, he tore the cruciate ligaments in the same knee, and he missed the most of the 1999–2000 season as a result. It was against Port Vale on April 22, 2000, that he made his first team debut, and it was against Barnsley the following week that he scored.

Bellamy set a new club record when he signed for Coventry for £6 million on August 16, 2000, to replace Robbie Keane, who had left the club. After being pleased by manager Gordon Strachan, he decided to join with Newcastle United despite receiving a lot of attention from the club. He made a shaky start to his Coventry career, scoring just three league goals by the start of December, two of which were penalty kicks, as he struggled to make an impact. When his team defeated Leicester City on December 10, 2000, he scored the game-winning goal to give them a critical three points.

Bellamy’s form improved following the arrival of John Hartson, who would become his Wales striking partner. Coventry, on the other hand, were relegated at the conclusion of the 2000–01 season after finishing 19th in the Premier League, bringing their record of 34 straight seasons in the English top division to an end. As a result, Bellamy finished his one and only season at the club with eight goals in 39 games.

Bellamy was cited as stating the following after leaving the club: “At Coventry, I never once had a good time. I was feeling a little down in the dumps. I had had such a good time in Norwich, but I soon realised that I had taken a step backwards in my life.”
