Dallas Stars Biography and Career:
The Dallas Stars are a professional ice hockey club headquartered in the city of Dallas, Texas, United States. In the National Hockey League (NHL), they represent the Central Division of the Western Conference. They were established as the Minnesota North Stars during the 1967 NHL expansion, and are situated in Bloomington, Minnesota, where they participate in their first season.
As a result of each franchise’s financial difficulties, the NHL gave authorization for the team to combine with the Cleveland Barons before the 1978–79 season, which took place before that season. After much deliberation, the franchise decided to move to Dallas for the 1993–94 season. The Stars played their home games at Reunion Arena from its relocation until 2001, when they relocated to the American Airlines Center, which was less than 1.5 miles (2.4 km) away.
The Stars have won eight division championships in Dallas, two Presidents’ Trophies as the league’s best regular-season club, the Western Conference championship three times, and the Stanley Cup in 1998–99, among other honors. The Minnesota North Stars joined the NHL in 1967 as part of the league’s six-team expansion to the North American Hockey League. Although initially successful on the ice and in the stands, the Minnesota North Stars were forced to close their doors due to financial difficulties after a string of dismal seasons in the mid-1970s.
After falling just short in the Western Conference Finals the previous season, the Stars went out and acquired what they considered to be the last piece in their quest for a championship: prolific goal-scorer Brett Hull in the off-season of 1998. With the St. Louis Blues, Hull had already had a storied career that included three straight 70-goal seasons as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy. However, a rift with Blues management resulted in Hull being released and signing with another team in the NHL. Additionally, this was the Stars’ first season in the Pacific Division after the NHL’s division realignment in 1998.
Following their last regular-season game of the 2012–13 season (a 3–0 defeat to the Detroit Red Wings), the Dallas Stars dismissed general manager Joe Nieuwendyk the following day, effective immediately. The next day, the Stars presented Jim Nill, the former deputy general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, as their 11th general manager in franchise history.
As a result, the coaching staff was dismissed on May 14, and on May 31, 2013, Scott White was re-introduced as the organization’s executive vice president of hockey operations. With the acquisition of Tyler Seguin, Rich Peverley, and Ryan Button from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Lou Eriksson, Reilly Smith, Matt Fraser, and Joe Morrow, Nill completed his first significant deal as general manager of the organization.
Jamie Benn, the captain of the Dallas Stars, earned the Art Ross Trophy for the 2014–15 season after being first in the league in points. Jamie Benn’s victory in the Art Ross Trophy was the lone bright point of the 2014–15 regular season. As a result of his four points in the Stars’ last regular-season game on April 11, 2015, Benn finished the season with 87 points and was awarded the Art Ross Trophy. It took him a little over eight seconds to score his last point, which enabled him to pass John Tavares for the MVP title with 8.5 seconds remaining to play.
During the 2015–16 season, the Stars earned their first Central Division championship since 1998 and finished with the best regular-season record in the Western Conference, finishing first in the Western Conference. In the first round of the playoffs, they beat the Minnesota Wild in six games, and they advanced to the second round. After that, they met the St. Louis Blues for the first time since 2001 in the second round, and they were defeated in a seven-game series.
For the eighth time in nine seasons, the Stars ended with a 34–37–11 record in an injury-plagued 2016–17 campaign, missing out on the playoffs. As a consequence of these events, the club stated that the contract of head coach Lindy Ruff will not be extended. For the next season, Ken Hitchcock returned as head coach, and the Stars missed the playoffs for the second time in a row.
After the season, Hitchcock stepped down as head coach, and Jim Montgomery took over as his replacement. After making it to the playoffs in Montgomery’s first season as coach, the Stars defeated their division rivals, the Nashville Predators, in a six-game series in the first round, but fell to the eventual Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues in a seven-game series, losing game seven on the road in double overtime, by a score of 2–1. Montgomery was fired after the season, and his replacement, Jim Montgomery, was fired after the season.

Following a five-game series victory against the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2019–20 season, the Stars advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since the 2000–01 season. After that, they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games. The next season, they were eliminated from the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
