Damian Marley Biography and Career:

Damian Marley, better known as “Junior Gong” and more recently as “Gongzilla,” was born in 1978 to parents Bob Marley & Cindy Breakspeare, who had won the title of Miss World in 1976. Damian Robert Nesta Marley is also known as “Junior Gong.” As a young adult, he discovered he had a talent and a love for speaking out for those who could not stand up for themselves. Damian, who calls himself a “Spiritual Revolutionary,” has put in a lot of effort to establish his place in the annals of music history and provide a new point of view to the Marley legacy to the 21st century.

At 13, Damian started playing in a group named “The Shepherds,” composed of Shiah Coore and Yashema Beth McGregor, daughter of reggae artists Freddie McGregor and Judy Mowatt. He subsequently began traveling with his brothers, Stephen, Ky-Mani, Julian, and Ziggy. Shiah Coore is currently a member of Damian.

In 1996, Damian established himself as a distinct branch of the Marley family when he released his first solo album, “Mr. Marley.” His second album, “Halfway Tree,” was published in 2001 by a big record company. This album highlighted Damian’s exceptional talent at fusing dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop genres. This album garnered a lot of attention for Damian, stayed on the Billboard Top Reggae Album Charts for 158 weeks, and won him his first Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2002.

Although Damian was humbled by this acknowledgment from the international music community, he continued to toil away in the studio, creating the framework for the compositions that would eventually form his highly awaited album, “Welcome To Jamrock.” The lyrics of this album depicted Bob Marley as a genuine spiritual revolutionary.

Marley utilized his skill to provoke a spiritual shift while attempting to establish a new way of thinking, and the album’s lyrics portrayed him as an authentic spiritual revolutionary. He is said to have “the conviction of a street preacher with the erudition of a university economist,” and this is how he is characterized in a phrase.

Rolling Stone ranked “Welcome to Jamrock” as one of the Top 100 Songs of the Decade, and Damian’s album of the same name won Best Reggae Album and Best Urban/Alternative Performance at the 2006 Grammy Awards. “Welcome to Jamrock” was also named one of the Top 100 Songs of the Decade by Rolling Stone.

In the annals of the Grammy Awards, Damian is the first Jamaican reggae musician to win two awards on the same evening. Moreover, he is the first reggae musician to win the Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. He has this title to this day. The song Welcome to Jamrock was deemed the “greatest reggae tune of the decade” by the New York Times.

Welcome to Jamrock paved the way for Damian to collaborate with Nas on the much-lauded album “Distant Relatives” in 2010, a project investigating the connections between reggae, hip-hop, and African music. Welcome to Jamrock received widespread critical praise. The link to their African lineage, which served as a source of inspiration for the album on both a musical and lyrical level, is alluded to in the album’s title, indicating the tie between the artists.

Rolling Stone called the album “an Afrocentric winner,” while USA Today described it as a “potent and frequently challenging combination.” The album debuted at position five on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart and number one on the charts for R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Rap Albums, and Reggae Albums. Billboard praised the album as “a vibrant blend.”

As part of the Distant Relatives Tour, which began in May 2011 and lasted until November 2011, Damian traveled to a variety of locations around the world, including South America, Europe, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, and North America, to name a few, and performed for thousands of fans at each stop.

In 2012, Damian continued to push the boundaries of music by collaborating with Skrillex on their ground-breaking track “Make It Bun Dem.” Rolling Stone referred to the way as “a monster mash-up of dubstep and dancehall,” resulting in several remixes of the original version. Damian has also continued to push the boundaries of music in subsequent years. Recently, Damian has released two more singles: “Set Up Shop” and “Affairs of the Heart,” both of which have been played on radio stations worldwide.

While he continues to disseminate the message for people whose voices are not being heard, Damian continues to travel all over the globe with his band to heal and amuse audiences while spreading the word. Together with his brothers Stephen and Julian, he is working under the Ghetto Youths International Label to find talented musicians, help them develop their skills, and sign contracts. They do this by applying their musical ability and extensive experience to create novel and distinctive musical styles.

Marley maintained a hectic schedule in the following years by appearing as a guest artist on albums recorded by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey, and his brother Stephen. His collaboration with Nas on the album Distant Relatives, which was centered on the continent of Africa and was released in 2010, brought Bob Marley’s connection to the hip-hop scene into sharper focus.

Throughout the next several years, Marley was featured as a player on albums by Bruno Mars, Joss Stone, Sean Paul, and Shaggy. He also released a song with Skrillex in 2012, all while touring & working on a new album simultaneously.

The long-awaited album Stony Hill was released by Island Records in 2017, the same year that Stephen Marley appeared as a guest artist on Jay Z’s 4:44 album. “Medication” was one of the songs that included Marley’s assistance. In April 2018, a reworked version of “Medication” featuring Wiz Khalifa & Ty Dolla $ign was available for purchase and download.
