Danny Elfman Biography and Career:

Composer Daniel Robert Elfman, born in the United States, has become a Hollywood legend. His 1989 scores for ‘The Simpsons and ‘Batman’ are still instantly recognizable today. He first came to prominence in the music industry in the 1980s because of his performances with the rock band Oingo Boingo. After contributing to the musical backdrops of several films produced by Tim Burton, he gained widespread recognition as a film composer.

He’s the man who composed some of the most memorable scores for film and TV. Films including “Beetlejuice”, “Batman” (1989), “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993), “Good Will Hunting,” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997, and “Men in Black” (1999) all featured his music. Elfman is well-known as both a film composer and an orchestral composer. Throughout Europe and the United States, he has performed in concert for adoring fans. It’s hard to overstate the amazing nature of Elfman’s rise from playing in a small rock band to becoming a musical icon.

On May 29, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, US, Danny Elfman entered the world. Blossom Elfman Sr. taught in the United States Air Force and was a writer and artist of children’s books. Blossom “Clare” Elfman, his mother, is a best-selling author. His family was affluent, therefore he was raised in the Los Angeles suburb of Baldwin Hills. He was the only Jewish kid of his race in the neighborhood, and his red hair made him stand out immediately.

When Elfman was young, he went to the movie theatre with his family and heard the music of Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner for the first time. At the same time, he and some of his classmates started a ska band.

He left high school to join his brother Richard Elfman in France, where he participated in the experimental musical theatre troupe Le Grand Magic Circus. Later, when on tour in Africa, they switched gears and performed a totally new set of songs. Elfman’s extensive travel provided him with invaluable education by exposing him to a wide variety of musical traditions from around the world.

He never officially enrolled in the “California Institute of the Arts” (CalArts), but he did spend a significant amount of time there learning new techniques. Richard Elfman, Danny’s older brother, formed the musical theatre troupe The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo in 1972. For his brother’s first film, “Forbidden Zone,” Danny, a crucial member of the band, composed the original score (1980).

In 1976, after Danny took over as frontman, the band changed its name to Oingo Boingo and began recording and performing under that moniker. The counter-leftist rock band’s daring and original sound quickly won over the locals. In 1985, Hollywood director Tim Burton enlisted Danny Elfman to compose the score for a film version of the cult TV series Pee-Big wee’s Adventure. Danny wrote hypnotic music with the help of Oingo Boingo’s guitarist and arranger Steve Bartek, which caught the attention of established musicians like Nino Rota and Bernard Herrmann.

Elfman became a regular member of Burton’s crew after the success of the score for “Pee-Big wee’s Adventure,” and he went on to write scores for other major films such as “Batman” (1989), “Alice in Wonderland” (2010), etc.

Ice Dance, an orchestral composition he composed for Tim Burton’s 1990 picture Edward Scissorhands, received widespread recognition. His singing voice was used for the character of Jack Skellington in movies such as “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993). Elfman’s latter voice work includes that of Bonejangles, the skeleton from the 2005 British film “Corpse Bride,” and the Oompa-Loompas from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (2005).

In addition to composing music for Tim Burton’s films, he has also worked on the scores and soundtracks for such blockbuster blockbusters as Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), Oz: The Great and Powerful (2013), and Justice League (2016), all of which are part of the DC Extended Universe (2017). Along with Brian Tyler, he composed the score for “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in 2015. Between 2015 and 2018, he composed the score for the ‘Fifty Shades film series.

Elfman composed the music for the March 2019 Disney animated film Dumbo, which was directed by Tim Burton. In 2019, he will also have his work in the film “Men in Black: International” released in theatres.
He is rumored to be working on the score for the upcoming American fantasy comedy film, “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle,” set for release in 2020.

After meeting John Mauceri in 2004, Elfman began his career as a concert composer. The American Composers Orchestra was having them record “Serenada Schizophrenia.” Subsequently, on February 23, 2005, the piece had its world debut in New York’s Carnegie Hall.

In 2006, Elfman composed “the overture to a non-existent musical” titled The Overeager Overture for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. It was in 2011 that he composed the score for the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to host the Cirque du Soleil production Iris, which ran from July 21 to January 19.

The performance in Prague of his 40-minute Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, “Eleven Eleven,” was the pinnacle of his career as a concert composer. Mauceri presided over it once more. The piece has since been recorded and released in 2019, following performances in Germany and the United States. For the Tim Burton film “Beetlejuice,” Danny Elfman composed and orchestrated the music. There is a consensus that Elfman’s work on the 1988 film is among his finest. The film’s premise establishes it as a mixture of fantasy and comedy/horror from the get-go.

The beautiful score he wrote for the 1989 film “Batman” is still played at fan events today. The film’s theme was a major factor in its commercial success and is widely regarded as one of the best superhero scores of all time. A father of two, Danny Elfman is a proud dad to Lola and Mali. The couple tied the knot on November 29, 2003, and since then have had a son, Oliver.

The bassist for his college band, Sonic Youth, Kim Gordon, was the object of his affection. Most of Elfman’s renowned relatives also have careers in the show business. His brother Richard Elfman is a well-known actor and filmmaker, and his mother Blossom ‘Clare’ Elfman is an Emmy-winning novelist. Bodhi Elfman, an actor, is married to Jenna Elfman, another actor in the family.

A former atheist, the well-known composer has since converted to skepticism. He said he had been a sharp critic of the American political system, but claimed travel had transformed him into a right-wing patriot.

He lost his hearing completely from being in a rock band for so long. He no longer performs at concerts or frequents raucous nightlife venues. But occasionally you can catch him playing with a full orchestra. Neither Ed Wood (1994) nor Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2001) had music composed by Elfman, yet both were directed by Tim Burton (2007).

After finishing high school, he moved to Paris to train as a street performer, where he discovered how to breathe fire. Sung all five of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’s songs (2005). He made a recording of himself singing it and then manipulated the pitch of the voice to make it sound like a wide range of tones.
