David Banner Biography and Career:

A member of the rap trio Crooked Lettaz. The late-’90s hip-hop phenomenon David Banner helped establish Mississippi. His stage name derives from: Lavell William Crump grew up in Brookhaven. The Incredible Hulk’s human alters persona inspired the moniker. In 2000, Banner released his first solo album, Them Firewater Boyz, Vol.

He had a strong voice. He started on Penalty Records. He concluded that a New York-based record label couldn’t deal with the south. His debut album sold 10,000 copies at home. He did it with his team. Mississippi: The Album and MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water earned him a star in the US in 2003.

These albums had singles like “Crank It Up,” “Like a Pimp,” and “Cadillac on 22’s.” Two years later, he released Certified, his fourth album. On the album are Lil Jon, Jazze Pha, and Kevin Rudolf. On the album were Jadakiss, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, and Too $hort. Certified reached #10 on Billboard. The Greatest Story Ever Told was Banner’s fifth album, released in 2008. It was his second consecutive third-place Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop album.

His following album, Death of a Pop Star, was produced by 9th Wonder. It was promoted with a comic book explaining the album’s societal concerns. Ludacris, Marsha Ambrosius, Anthony Hamilton, and Erykah Badu made appearances. Then came roles in films like Stomp the Yard: Homecoming, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and Ride Along.

Despite releasing a mixtape called Sex, Drugs, and Video Games in 2012, he would not release an album until 2017. Then came Cee-Lo, Black Thought, and Trinidad James. They labeled David Banner “a gangster intellectual in a crunk society.” His work is full of contrasts. He didn’t shy away from the filthy and violent themes usual in Southern hip-hop music. His hushed, scratchy voice added to the intensity of his sex and violence stories.

When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, he joined Kanye West in criticizing the US government’s response. He also rapped on disadvantaged blacks in Southern cities. Asked about his music, he said it was “a Bible with a Playboy cover.” Those schizophrenic traits, plus Banner’s knack for self-promotion, made him a mid-2000s hip-hop sensation.

“A Playboy Bible” Jackson is a Mississippian. The Incredible Hulk has a nice guy named David Banner. Lavell Crump named himself David Banner after him. Billy was his middle name as a child. “He’s a lot of people,” Carolyn Crump said. But he’s truthful with them. Banner’s family was devout and encouraging.

He learned to play music on a $10 electronic keyboard, a drum machine, and a childhood Casio keyboard sampler. His playlist included Stetsasonic, NWA, and the Geto Boys. When Southern rappers started to emerge, he was influenced by OutKast, an Atlanta pair who developed a wide range of songs. By the time Banner got to Provine High School, he had developed his own sound.

His task was to assist with groceries. He earned extra cash by selling homemade CDs from his own trunk. She advised him to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his mother had also studied. Despite not wanting to go to college, he fared well, earning a business degree and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland.

Banner dropped out of school one semester and a thesis short of his master’s degree because he was too busy with music. But his years of business education would aid him as a musician. Look, I was the kind of person who wanted to change the world with his music, Banner told Sonia Murray of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I graduated from the University of Maryland in the top five of my class, so I did well in school. How to succeed in this industry?” Crooked Lettaz was created in college by him and Kamikaze.

They went on to become major hip-hop stars. Not many Southern hip-hop musicians began out recording music when the duo did. They had a distinct sound that drew the attention of Tommy Boy. Making tunes for Trick Daddy and Li’l Flip made Banner a well-known young musician.

Some of Banner’s music was played on WJMI in Jackson. “WJMI’s operations manager liked David’s work,” Watkins was told. “It was wonderful stuff. His tempo was fast. His ears were street-tuned. Make him a DJ. He has a loyal following here.” “Them Firewater Boyz” was a big hit in Jackson clubs.

Grey Skies by Crooked Lettaz was released in 1999. Hip-hop publications and All Music Guide’s Jon Azpiri praised it. Azpiri commended the live instrumentation on “A Girl Named Cim,” the koto on “Firewater,” and “Get Crunk’s” brilliant remix of the Run DMC rap classic “Rock Box.” After this auspicious start, Banner’s career seemed doomed.

In Atlanta, he shared a room with a friend’s four pit bulldogs. He was poor. A bunch of Birmingham youngsters took Banner’s old van, which contained most of his stuff. Fortunately, the master copies of a CD Banner was working on were taken.

And they hurled them out of his van and onto the radio station’s parking lot. God’s sign, Banner continued going. He played wherever he could, and he got the ear of Steve Rifkind, of Universal. He had a five-album deal. Mississippi: The Album was Banner’s debut major-label album. “A really crazy record,” said All Music Guide’s John Bush.

Some of the tracks are more contemplative than others, such as “Mississippi” and “F ‘Em.” “Caddy on 22’s

“Last track “delivers a touching prayer over an acoustic melody worthy of Lynyrd Skynyrd,” said Evan Serpick of Entertainment Weekly. The record drew a lot of notice. “Like a Pimp” feat. Li’l Flip topped the charts.

So did several prominent rappers and producers. Mississippi: The Screwed & Chopped Album was remixed by Southern rap producer Michael Watts. MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water was immediately released. It had Twista and Busta Rhymes as guests and received more great reviews and attention.

Putting a lot of effort into promoting his music helped Banner gain popularity. He said he loved Mississippi music and regularly removed his shirt to reveal a large “Mississippi” tattoo on his back. The banner was a force at music industry shows. Over a table, Banner “ripped his shirt off, and threw Courvoisier on the throng,” according to Village Voice journalist Tom Breihan.

A cape made of Universal label banners was afterward worn by him to promote Mississippi music. Banner bought five trucks to be David Banner billboards by wrapping them in promotional materials. Here’s how it went: Banner’s response to Hurricane Katrina’s devastation at the end of August 2005 was a mix of direct action and criticism of President George W. Bush’s administration.

Banner converted his tour bus into a charity truck. “I got back to Mississippi before our government,” said New York Times’ Kelefa Sanneh. He had food and supplies. On September 17, 2005, in Atlanta, Georgia, it aimed to raise $1.5 million. Several Southern rappers attended the event.

“Bush is awarding Halliburton the contracts to reconstruct our cities,” Sanneh claims. Bush is a sex toy.” After Katrina, Banner began donating his money to the neighborhood. He granted five locals $10,000 college scholarships. It was exciting to see David Banner move into new areas of the entertainment world. In 2005, he sought a film role.
