David Foster Biography and Career:

Originally from Canada, David Walter Foster has worked in the music industry as a producer, composer, vocalist, and arranger. Foster’s work with chart-topping musicians like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Celine Dion has made him a household name.

When Foster first entered the music industry in 1971, he was hired as the keyboardist for Eirik Wangberg’s band Skylark. Foster’s prowess on the piano caught the attention of many, and it ultimately led to his working with famous musicians like John Lennon and Rod Stewart. When Foster’s band’s hit “Wildflower” just missed the Top Ten in the Billboard charts in 1973, he became an overnight sensation. Foster, however, quickly started working on things outside of the band. His first major project in this field was Attitudes’ self-titled 1976 album, which he also produced. Then, in 1979, Foster shot to fame when “Earth, Wind & Fire” sang his song “After the Love is gone,” which had won the Grammy for Best Rhythm and Blues Song.

David Foster picThere were two other nominations for the song. Foster’s production of the cast CD for the 1982 Broadway production of “Dreamgirls” earned him his second Grammy in the Production category. When Chicago, one of the greatest rock and roll bands in American history, wanted to reignite their flame, Foster joined the team. In 1985, he won the Grammy for Producer of the Year thanks to his work with them on Chicago’s 17 and the song “Hard Habit to Break.” He co-produced “The Best Years of Our Lives” with Neil Diamond, a music icon, in 1988. In the late 1980s, he became well-known as an arranger because to his work on Barbra Streisand’s 1987 hit “Somewhere.”

Foster produced the multi-platinum selling soundtrack of 1992’s “The Bodyguard,” starring Whitney Houston. Foster received Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Unforgettable” by Natalie Cole, as well as his second Producer of the Year Grammy, in 1992. Foster was again commissioned to compose the Olympic anthems for the 1988 and 1996 games.

His success was boosted by his work with pop superstar Celine Dion. Some of Dion’s most popular albums were produced by him, including “The Color of My Love” (1993), “Falling Into You” (1996, featuring Dion), and “These are Special Times” (1998), a Christmas album. The record label “143 Records,” which Foster co-founded, was another of his many entrepreneurial endeavors. Foster produced the first albums for future multi-platinum musicians including Michael Bublé and Josh Groban with his label, 143 Records.

Foster has put out 10 studio albums under his own name. It all started with his first album, simply named “The Best of Me,” which was released in 1983. Both “Hit Man: David Foster and Friends” (2008) and “The Christmas Album” (1993) gained significant airplay and critical acclaim.

Presently, David Foster is the chairman of Verve Music Group. He was nominated for 47 Grammys throughout the course of his incredible career and ended up with 16. There is a star for him on the Hollywood Walk of Fame right next to the Capitol Records Building.

Canadian-born David Foster got his musical beginnings at a young age in Victoria, British Columbia. He started out like other kids his age by taking piano lessons, but his natural ability set him apart fast. Foster began studying music at the University of Washington when he was 13 years old. Three years later, he began his professional career by joining the band of rock & roll icon Chuck Berry.

Foster and his band, Skylark, relocated to Los Angeles in 1971. In 1973, Skylark had a hit with “Wildflower,” which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard charts. Foster used that achievement as a springboard into a prosperous career as a session keyboardist. The rest of Skylark went back to Canada after their breakup, but Foster stayed in L.A. “For some reason, I really wanted to jam with all the greats. When I was young and eager, I had a really optimistic mindset “This is what Foster revealed to Keyboard, Foster said.

After spending a year as a keyboardist in the orchestra pit for the Roxy Theatre’s production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, he was promoted to co-director. Many producers and musicians who saw performances of Rocky Horror were impressed by Foster’s abilities. For thirty minutes before to the performance, the orchestra would play anything the conductor deemed appropriate. Producers and engineers in the music business started phoning Foster to have him play keyboards during their daytime recording sessions after hearing his work.

Working with famous musicians like John Lennon, George Harrison, Barbra Streisand, and Rod Stewart helped Foster establish himself as a skilled session keyboardist. Over time, he worked his way up to producing and creating his own songs after contributing to session composition and arrangement. Alice Cooper, the Average White Band, Boz Scaggs, and Carole Bayer Sager were among his first customers as a producer.

Foster’s chat with fellow producer Quincy Jones was a watershed moment in his career. “I said, “It’s not awful, but it’s not a wonderful record,” while discussing the Average White Band’s Shine. The music isn’t really excellent. He questioned, “Who made it?”. The list includes your name. Keep in mind that you are accountable for maintaining that log. It must be flawless in every way.” Foster learned then that, in order to create the finest record possible, he needed to have high standards for the musicians he collaborated with.

Foster took Jones’s advice to heart and got his start in the industry by producing two albums for Daryl Hall and John Oates. He established not just his ability to perceive great music, but also to create it. In 1979, he earned his first Grammy for co-writing “After the Love Has Gone” by Earth, Wind, and Fire with Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin, which was nominated for best rhythm and blues song.

After three more years, the cast recording of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Dreamgirls earned him his second Grammy for producer of the year. When released, the album quickly rose up the Billboard charts, eventually peaking at Number 11. This made it the highest-charting cast recording since Hair in 1969. When “Hard to Say I’m Sorry” by Chicago, from the album Chicago 16, which Foster cowrote and produced, topped the Billboard charts, he received even more acclaim.

The Japanese company published Foster’s first solo album, titled Best of Me. Afterward, in 1982, it was released in the United States by Sound Design Records. Foster produced Lionel Richie’s Can’t Slow Down album, which went on to sell 10 million copies the following year. By that time, he had already established himself as a prominent producer in the field of popular music. Although he might have easily rested on his laurels, he instead took advantage of the many opportunities his status brought him.

Admitting to Paul Green of Billboard, “I realize I’ve done a bit too much bouncing about already in my career,” Foster said. “Someone once said that I was the kind of guy who never seemed to be able to hold down a position. But what I really like is the fact that I can produce the Tubes and have a huge AOR [album-oriented rock] success, and then flip around and have a solo album that sounds like ‘Love Story ’83, and then also work with the R&B artists.”

Foster’s output of music and literature remained mostly uninterrupted. In 1984, he won his third and fourth Grammys for his work as a producer on Chicago’s Chicago 17 and for the song “Hard Habit to Break,” respectively. But his relentless work schedule caught up with him, and after years of 16-hour days, Foster was so physically and mentally exhausted that he feared he’d lost his creative genius. He and his wife Rebecca went back to Canada for a vacation. The American “We Are the World” campaign and the English “Band-Aid” initiative to generate money for famine relief in Africa inspired the Canadian equivalent, and just as he was settling in, Quincy Jones contacted and requested him to write and produce it.

He stepped up to the challenge, writing and producing Northern Lights’ “Tears Are Not Enough.” Foster finally found success in Canada when a video about the production was shown there. In fact, many Canadians were familiar with Foster’s work but were unaware that he was born in the country instead of continuing his vacation, he returned to Los Angeles. Not long after, he received his sixth Grammy for producing the smash song “Somewhere” by Barbra Streisand for her Broadway Album.

Since the release of “Stay the Night” (the first single from Chicago 17) on May 5, 1984, at number 49, Foster has consistently charted at least one track on Billboard’s Hot 100 list every week until April 12, 1986. For most of those two years, he concurrently charted with two or more records most weeks. And in a very rare feat, he simultaneously had five of his songs on the charts in the month of August 1985.

Foster’s 1986 self-titled Atlantic Records album included a collaboration with Olivia Newton-John. It was also in the same year that he started the David Foster Foundation to help kids who need organ transplants and the David Foster Celebrity Softball Game in Victoria, British Columbia.
