David Geffen Biography and Career:

David Lawrence Geffen is a famous business mogul, producer, film studio executive, and philanthropist from the United States. He was born in the United States on February 21, 1943. Geffen and Elliot Roberts started Asylum Records in 1971, Geffen Records in 1980, DGC Records in 1990, and DreamWorks SKG in 1994.

His donations have helped the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as a number of other schools and research centers. Abraham Geffen and Batya Volovskaya (1909–1988) were David Geffen’s parents. He was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, in a place called Borough Park.

The store that Geffen’s mother owned and ran in Borough Park was called Chic Corsets by Geffen. After meeting in Mandatory Palestine, both of his parents moved to the United States, where they eventually started a family. Geffen “barely passed” New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, New York, in 1960 with a grade point average of 66.

He went to the University of Texas at Austin for a while, then switched to Brooklyn College before dropping out for the second time. After that, he picked up his life and moved to Los Angeles, California, which is known as the entertainment capital of the world. He went to Santa Monica College, which used to be called Santa Monica City College, in Santa Monica, California, for a short time, but he dropped out. Geffen said that he had trouble in school because he had dyslexia. Geffen began his career in the entertainment business in the mailroom of the William Morris Agency (WMA). He quickly became a talent agent thereafter appearing briefly in the 1961 movie The Explosive Generation as a background actor.

In order for him to be considered for the WMA position, he had to show proof that he had graduated from college. He later said in an interview that on the job application, he sent to WMA, he lied about his education by saying that he got his degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Geffen was able to read a letter that UCLA sent to WMA saying that he had not graduated from UCLA. Geffen worked in the mailroom, so he could read the letter. He sent the letter to WMA after making the changes needed to show that he had gone to the school and earned his diploma. Elliot Roberts was one of Geffen’s coworkers in the mailroom.

Later, Roberts would become Geffen’s business partner in a management company. Geffen left William Morris to become a manager of people, and Laura Nyro and Crosby, Stills, and Nash were his first big successes. Ahmet Ertegün, the founder of Atlantic Records, suggested that Geffen start his own record company when Geffen was trying to get a record deal for young Jackson Browne.

At the time, Geffen was trying to get Jackson Browne a record deal. Geffen couldn’t get Jackson Browne a record deal with any other company, so in 1971, he teamed up with Elliot Roberts to start Asylum Records. The name “Asylum” was chosen for the record label because its founders were known for taking on musicians who had trouble finding a record company that would work with them.

During this time, Atlantic Records was in charge of getting the records to stores. Some of the artists signed to the label Asylum were The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Linda Ronstadt, Judee Sill, and J. D. Souther. Asylum was a big part of how the folk-rock sound of Southern California came to be. Later in the 1970s, David Geffen left Asylum Records.

Eventually, Warner Communications, which owns Atlantic Records, bought Asylum Records. In 1972, Elektra Records and Asylum Records joined together to make what is now called Elektra/Asylum Records. After the label was relaunched in 2004 as an urban music operation, it signed hip-hop artists like Waka Flocka Flame, Cam’ron, Gucci Mane, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, and Bun B. Geffen kept working as CEO until December 1975, when he accepted a job as vice chairman of the board of directors at Warner Bros. Studios. After that, he stopped working and went into retirement.

In 1977, he was wrongly told he had cancer. In the fall of 1978 and the spring of 1979, he worked at Yale University, where he taught a noncredit seminar on the music business and arts management. In this seminar, he had people like Jackson Browne and Paul Simon in the classroom with him. During his retirement, he worked as a teacher for a short time. David Geffen decided to go back to work in the entertainment industry soon after he got a clean bill of health from a second doctor in 1980. The second doctor’s test showed that the first doctor had made a mistake.

He started Geffen Records in 1980 and hired Ed Rosenblatt, a former Warner Bros. Records executive, to be the company’s president. The dramatic rise to fame of the Geffen label in just one year was a success, but it left people with mixed feelings. Geffen’s first artist to sign up was Donna Summer, who was eager to leave Casablanca/PolyGram Records. Summer was eager to get rid of her old name. Soon after that, Geffen released her album “The Wanderer.”

The album’s lead single reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album itself was later certified gold. In response, Casablanca released more singles from her 1979 album Bad Girls, like the song “Walk Away,” as well as a hits collection with the same name. By that time, though, the New Wave sound had already become the most popular style on the radio. Geffen Records released John Lennon’s album Double Fantasy in November 1980. This may seem like a big deal for a new record label, but Lennon said at the time that Geffen was the only one who believed in him enough to sign a deal with him without hearing the record first.
