David Lynch Biography and Career:

While growing up, Lynch’s father worked as a research scientist for the United States Forest Service, and the family traveled around quite a bit during his upbringing. In 1964, after graduating from high school in Alexandria, Virginia, he went on to study painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where he continued to pursue his dream until his death in 2011. Later in life, from 1965 to 1969, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. At the time, he was competing in an experimental painting and sculpture competition and created his first film, a 60-second animation titled Six Men Getting Sick (1967).

Upon enrolling at the American Picture Institute’s Center for Advanced Film Studies (later known as the AFI Conservatory) in 1970, Lynch began production on his debut feature film, Eraserhead, which was released the following year (1977). The hallucinatory film, which was shot over the course of a few years, perplexed and repulsed critics and many viewers upon its release, but it eventually became a cult classic on the midnight cinema circuit.

As a result of the film’s unquestionable artistic merits, Lynch was then chosen to direct the critically praised The Elephant Man (1980), which was based on the true story of Joseph Merrick, who suffered from a malady that resulted in severe deformity. Many honors were given to the picture, and Lynch was nominated for Academy Awards for best director and for best-adapted screenplay for his work on it. Dino De Laurentiis then engaged Lynch to write and direct the science-fiction epic Dune (1984), a film adaptation of the famous novel by Frank Herbert that was both a critical and financial failure on both the domestic and international markets.

Blue Velvet (1986), an eerie and surreal mystery that was widely considered as a masterpiece and won Lynch yet another Academy Award nomination for best director, was Lynch’s first feature film as a writer and director. But it was the extremely weird television mystery/soap drama Twin Peaks (1990–91), which he co-created with Mark Frost, that brought him to the attention of a broad audience.

The show gained a devoted fanbase and established itself as a cultural icon over time. Awarded the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990, David Lynch’s adaptation of Barry Gifford’s novel about a young couple who take to the road while being hunted by several kill men received the Palm d’Or at the festival. In contrast, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), which served as a prequel to the events of the television program, was met with a more negative reception.

Among his subsequent works were Lost Highway (1997) and The Straight Story (1999), which was startlingly straightforward in its execution and based on a true story about an elderly man who rides a lawn mower several hundred miles to visit his brother, among others. Mulholland Drive, a surrealist thriller set in Hollywood that Lynch wrote and filmed in 2001, was originally meant to be a television series but was never broadcast. He was awarded the Cannes Film Festival’s Best Director prize and was later nominated for an Academy Award.

In addition, he wrote and directed the feature Inland Empire (2006), as well as a number of short films, and in 2017, he brought the television series Twin Peaks back to life. Lynch worked as a writer, director, and sound designer for several of his films, as well as composing original music for each. Beginning in 2009, he began producing an Internet documentary series called Interview Project, which aired on PBS. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Paris in 2007 and featured his work as a painter, photographer, and installation artist, among other mediums. He co-authored Room to Dream, a memoir/biography that was published in 2018 and was written with Kristine McKenna. In 2019, he was presented with an honorary Academy Award in recognition of his lifetime achievements.
