David Muir Biography and Career:

“World News Tonight with David Muir” and the ABC News magazine “20/20” both include David Muir as a co-anchor and a well-known American journalist and anchor. Celebrity snooping, dramatic video material and his passionate gestures have helped make his program the most viewed news show in the country. “Made in America” is one of his other notable projects. He served as Diane Sawyer’s primary replacement as anchor of “ABC World News Tonight” before taking over.

Numerous ABC News primetime programs, including “Breaking Point: Heroin in America” and “Flashpoint: Refugees in America,” featured his reporting. As a result of his extensive travels, he has been able to bring you stories from all corners of the globe. He has won several ‘Emmy Awards,’ ‘Edward R. Murrow Awards,’ and ‘Associated Press Awards,’ among others.

On November 8, 1973, David Jason Muir was born in Syracuse, New York, and raised on Onondaga Hill by a Roman Catholic family. Pat Mills and Ronald Muir had him as their second child after their marriage ended in divorce. Step-siblings aren’t the only family members he has. When he was a kid, he wanted to be a television journalist and would recite the morning announcements at Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School like a broadcast.

At Ithaca College’s Park School of Communications in May of 1995, he earned a B.A. in Journalism after graduating from high school with honors, graduating magna cum laude. He studied political journalism at Georgetown University’s Institute on Political Journalism and abroad at the University of Salamanca in Spain while still in college.

Joining WTVH-TV in Syracuse in 1995 as an anchor and a reporter, David Muir flew to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Gaza Strip to cover the death of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. One of Syracuse’s “Best Local News Anchors” was quickly recognized by both the Associated Press and the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

His three-year stint with WCVB in Boston, where he covered the 9/11 events, began in 2000 when he was hired as a reporter. In addition to receiving the AP’s ‘Edward R. Murrow Award’ and the ‘National Headliner Award’ for the investigations, his work was once again honored by the organization.

ABC News hired him in August 2003 to anchor the overnight news show “World News Now,” and he has been there ever since. ABC News’ early morning show, ‘World News This Morning,’ is now called as “America This Morning” because of his role as its anchor. When Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 storm, reached New Orleans in September 2005, Muir was stranded in the Superdome and had to report on the worsening situation in the Convention Center and Charity Hospital while wading through chest-deep water.

The newsmagazine program, ‘Primetime,’ has periodically co-anchors with him since 2006. He also started hosting the program ‘World News Saturday’ beginning in June of the following year. He flew to the Israeli-Lebanon border in October 2006 to report on Israel’s battle with Hezbollah, and in March the following year, reported from within the Gaza Strip on the Hamas coup. While in Peru in 2007, he covered the deadliest earthquake in almost two decades, and he also covered the Ukraine crisis in September 2008.

A ’20/20′ hour he co-hosted with Diane Sawyer in April 2009 covered the issue of gun violence in the United States, and the second one in May 2009 focused on the rise in the number of homeless children in the United States. Returned multiple times to investigate assaults on women and to report on mental health crises in Haiti after the horrific earthquake in January 2010.

When the BP oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 and the Fukushima nuclear disaster occurred in March 2011, he went to both locations many times to cover the events. He later covered the political upheaval in Egypt; the famine in Mogadishu, Somalia; reported the site of President Obama’s visit after the school tragedy in Newtown and the movie theater mass killings in Aurora, Colorado.

In February 2012, he became the only anchor of his own weekend newscast program, called ‘World News with David Muir’, after which the weekend evening broadcasts showed a steady improvement in the ratings. During the 2012 U.S. Presidential election, he was one of ABC’s top reporters, and his interview with Mitt Romney made national news as a result.

‘The View,’ on which he co-hosted, has included his ‘Made in America’ series, which examines the state of the American economy. In March 2013, he was appointed to co-anchor ABC’s ’20/20,’ with Elizabeth Vargas, for yet another promotion.

For a while, he served as the primary replacement for “World News with Diane Sawyer,” but in September 2014, he officially took over as anchor and managing editor of “ABC World News.” In April 2015, ‘World News Tonight with David Muir’ became the most-watched evening newscast in the United States.

On his historic journey to Cuba, he aired exclusive interviews with former President Barack Obama and Apple CEO Tim Cook, who were both embroiled in a legal dispute with the FBI over the unlocking of the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone. He also conducted the first post-inauguration interview with President Trump, which he subsequently described as “awkward.”

For the first time since September 7, 2009, “World News Tonight with David Muir” has surpassed “NBC Nightly News” as the most viewed evening news broadcast in the United States. In 2012 and 2013, he was one of the most prominent journalists in the United States, garnering the most airtime.

Since then, he’s received several prestigious journalism awards, including the Emmy and Edward R. Murrow, for his work as a journalist covering the United States and abroad. After being listed as one of the “12 to Watch in TV News” by “TV Week” in 2013, his name was included to the list of “Sexiest Men Alive” by “People Magazine” in 2014.

Honorary doctorates from Ithaca College and Northeastern University, as well as the Jessica Savitch Award of Distinction for Excellence in Journalism, were bestowed upon him in 2015. In 2017, Temple Adath Yeshurun in Syracuse honored him ‘Citizen of the Year’.

David Muir mentors young students at Ithaca College, where he attended undergrad, and he spoke at the school’s graduation in May of this year. Both Northeastern University in Boston and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison had him give their graduation speeches with him in attendance.

When he was in sixth school, David Muir informed his teacher he was going to be a newscaster and replace Matt Lauer, and had sent a letter to Channel 5 anchor Ron Curtis requesting career advice.
