David Suchet Biography and Career:

John Aleck Suchet is a well-known English novelist, television news journalist, and host of the classical music program Classic FM. His full name is John Aleck Suchet, and he was born on March 29, 1944. Suchet is from a family of three, and one of his brothers is the famous actor Sir David Suchet.

Suchet was the son of Joan Patricia (née Jarché; 1916–1992), an actress, and Jack Suchet (1908–2001), who emigrated from South Africa to England in 1932 and trained to be a doctor at St. Mary’s Hospital, London in 1933. Suchet was born in London.

His mother was Joan Patricia (née Jarché), and his father was Jack Suchet. Suchet’s father was a consulting obstetrician and gynecologist who collaborated with Alexander Fleming on researching the effectiveness of penicillin in the treatment of sexual diseases. James Jarché, his maternal grandfather, was a well-known Fleet Street photographer who is best known for taking the first photographs of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.

He is also well-known for taking photographs of Louis Blériot (1909) and the Siege of Sidney Street. Suchet’s father was of Lithuanian Jewish descent, and his mother was English-born and Anglican (she was of Russian Jewish descent on her own father’s side, and of English descent on her mother’s side). Suchet’s paternal grandmother was of English descent, and Suchet’s maternal grandfather was of Lithuanian Jewish descent.

Suchet’s other two brothers, David and Peter, were an important part of his upbringing. After graduating from Uppingham School in Rutland in 1967 with a 2:2 in philosophy and political science from Queen’s College, Dundee (which was a part of the University of St. Andrews at the time but is now part of the University of Dundee), he went on to study at Queen’s College, Dundee.

In the year 2000, the University of Dundee presented him with an honorary doctorate for his work. Sir David, the younger of the two brothers, is also an actor. Peter, the youngest of his brothers, is an advertising executive who has since retired.

Suchet started his career in journalism in 1967 when the Reuters news agency hired him as a graduate trainee. This was the beginning of his long and successful career. During that period of time, he was exposed to the fundamentals of plain and objective news reporting.

In 1968, he was sent to the Paris office of Reuters, where he covered the workers’ and students’ revolt that eventually resulted in the resignation of President de Gaulle. Suchet worked for BBC TV News for a short period of time before moving on to ITN in 1972 to take a position as a screenwriter and sub-editor.

In 1976, he embarked on a career as a reporter, and throughout the course of the next decade, he covered significant events in national and international news, such as the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the Philippines Revolution.

Suchet acted as the presenter of ITN’s coverage of the commencement of the Gulf War during the whole night of the 16th and 17th of January 1991. The newscast set a record for ITN as the program with the longest stretch of continuous airtime.

In addition, he led or contributed to a large number of special event programs on ITN. He was also the primary commentator for ITN’s coverage of the burial of the Queen Mother, the wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones, and the funeral of Princess Diana.

In April 2004, he decided to resign from ITN. Later, he became the host of Five News, originally for a period of six months beginning in January 2006 and continuing until Christmas of the following year.
Suchet has also appeared as a guest host on ITV’s This Morning and Five’s The Wright Stuff. In addition, he has participated as a guest panelist on both shows. It was on Channel 5 that he presided over the return of the game program Going for Gold.

Suchet’s accomplishments in the fields of television reporting and newscasting have earned him a number of awards. The citation that accompanied the award lauded his abilities “to provide clarity to complex events.”

He was honored with the TRIC Newscaster of the Year award in the year 1996. In 2008, he was presented with the Royal Television Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which is the organization’s greatest honor.
