Desmond Cole Biography and Career:
Originally from Toronto, Ontario, Desmond Cole (born April 9, 1982) is a Canadian journalist, activist, author, and broadcaster based in Toronto. Colin Cole is the presenter of a weekly radio show on Newstalk 1010. He formerly worked as a writer for the Toronto Star and has also written for publications such as The Walrus, NOW Magazine, Torontoist, The Tyee, Ethnic Aisle, Toronto Life, and BuzzFeed. In particular, Cole’s advocacy on the subjects of police carding, racial discrimination, and deconstructing structural racism has garnered national attention. Cole was the subject of The Skin We’re In, a documentary shown on CBC Television in 2017. His first book, The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power will be published in January 2020 by the University of North Carolina Press.
In addition to having been born and raised in Red Deer, Alberta, Cole also attended high school in Oshawa, Ontario. Following two years at Queen’s University, he decided to leave because “university is now career training, and I believe that’s rubbish.” After two years of teaching French in the Durham area, he came to Toronto when he was 22 years old, where he started working with at-risk young people. Cole participated in the City Idol competition in Toronto in the spring of 2006 and was crowned the champion for the Toronto-East York region. Cole, who was 24 at the time of the 2006 Toronto municipal election, finished third in Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina, after receiving assistance in their campaign for city council in the autumn of 2006.
For Toronto Life, Cole wrote an article in 2015 titled “The Skin I’m In,” which investigated anti-Black racism in Toronto and throughout the province of Ontario. During the course of the piece, Cole was carded more than 50 times by the Toronto police department. According to Toronto Life, the story was the ninth most-read item in the last decade and received three honors at the National Magazine Awards in 2015. The article was adapted into a documentary film, The Skin We’re In, which aired on CBC Television in 2017. The film was directed by Charles Officer and was released in 2017.
Cole gained notoriety as a journalist for the Toronto Star, where he began writing in September 2015 and specialized on problems of race in the city. Cole resigned from his bi-monthly column at the Toronto Star in May 2017 after his editor informed him that he had violated the newspaper’s rules on journalism and activism by attending a meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board to express his opposition to the practice of carding and racial profiling by Toronto police officers. Many commentators pointed out the inconsistencies in the Star’s rebuke of Cole, and they referenced the Star’s long history of hiring and supporting columnists who are active in social justice movements.
Michael Cole was treated unfairly by the Star, according to Michele Landsberg, who used to write for the paper. In her letter, she said that Cole felt obligated to follow through on a promise he had made to black youngsters at a lecture he had given during Black History Month. Landsberg drew a comparison between the support the Star gave to feminist action throughout her 25 years as a Star columnist and the Star’s lack of support for Cole during his trial.
In recognition of his contributions to freedom of speech, PEN Canada awarded Cole the Ken Filkow Prize on December 14, 2017. Around the end of 2017, rumors circulated that Cole was considering running for mayor of Toronto; however, Cole subsequently said that we would not be participating in the election.
Cole criticized Toronto Mayor John Tory on July 10, 2018, for referring to two black men who shot and injured two children as “sewer rats” after they were shot by police. Cole clarified that he had not used animal language to refer to Alek Minassian, the perpetrator of the recent Toronto Van Attack, as he had previously said. Specifically, Cole claimed that Tory’s language was a catalyst for generalized racial discrimination and that dehumanizing offenders made rehabilitation more difficult.
The Toronto Star reported on October 21, 2018, the eve of the election for mayor of Toronto, that Cole alleged challenger Saron Gebresellassi had taken a list of contact numbers from incumbent mayor John Tory, and that Cole believed the public should have been told.
