Detroit Red Wings Biography and Career:

The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team located in Detroit, Michigan, United States. In 1926, the club was established and now competes in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Detroit Red Wings, one of the “Original Six” clubs that comprised the National Hockey League from 1942 to the league’s expansion in 1967, are not only one of hockey’s oldest franchises, but they are also one of its most successful, having won 11 Stanley Cups during that time period.

They presently play their home games in the Little Caesars Arena after playing for about 40 years at the Joe Louis Arena, which has a capacity of 20,066 people, and after spending more than 40 years playing at Olympia Stadium.

From 1933–34 through 1965–66, the Red Wings were only out of the playoffs four times over that period. In the wake of almost two decades of being an afterthought, the Red Wings have qualified for the postseason in 23 of the previous 25 seasons, including the last 17 in a row (including the current season). This is the current record for the longest active string of post-season appearances in all the professional sports in the United States.

The Detroit Red Wings had some early success in the 1930s, thanks to the efforts of coach and later general manager Jack Adams. Following a triumph against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1935–36 season, the club went on to win another Stanley Cup the following year against the same opponents. These early Red Wings teams included future Hall of Famer Syd Howe, who was also a member of the Red Wings’ Stanley Cup-winning club from 1942–43, as well as other future Hall of Famers.

Two of hockey’s all-time best players, right-wing Gordie Howe and goalkeeper Terry Sawchuk, were instrumental in guiding the club to its greatest success during the 1950s, when they won four Stanley Cups in a row in 1950, 1952, and 1955. Following that period, the club went through a period of mediocrity that included just two playoff appearances between the 1966–67 and 1982–83 NHL seasons, garnering the moniker “The Dead Wings.”

Detroit selected center, Steve Yzerman, in the first round of the 1983 NHL Draft and returned to the playoffs the following year. A year later, in 1987–88, Yzerman and fellow forwards Bob Probert and Petr Klima guided the Red Wings to their first divisional championship in 23 years, capping off a remarkable comeback.

The “Russian Five,” which consisted of Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Igor Larionov, and Slava Fetisov, rose to prominence in the 1990s as a result of their success in the Soviet Union. After joining forces with Yzerman, left-wing Brendan Shanahan, and defender Nicklas Lidstrom under the direction of coach Scott Bowman, the Russian Five were instrumental in helping Detroit win two Stanley Cups in a row in the 1996–97 and 1997–98 NHL seasons (the latter sans Konstantinov) Dominik Hayk and Brett Hull, both seasoned free-agent additions and regular All-Stars, were key members of a New York Rangers club that won the Stanley Cup for the second time in the 2001–02 season.

When the Minnesota Wild defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2007–08 Stanley Cup Final, Lidstrom, goalkeeper Chris Osgood, and left-wing Henrik Zetterberg were the standout players on the squad. During the next season, Lidstrom, Osgood, and Zetterberg, together with center Pavel Datsyuk (who finished fourth in the league with 97 points), helped the Red Wings advance to the Stanley Cup finals, where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins in seven games. During the 2011–12 season, Detroit won a franchise record of 23 straight home games, establishing a new mark.

Following the 2012–13 season, the Red Wings were relocated from the Western Conference to the Eastern Conference as part of the NHL reorganization. The Red Wings’ first three seasons in the Eastern Conference all concluded with them being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. After 25 straight postseason appearances (tied for the third-longest postseason streak in NHL history), the team’s run of 25 consecutive postseason appearances came to an end in 2016–17.

After failing to reach the playoffs in each of the next two seasons, the Detroit Red Wings recruited Steve Yzerman as their general manager in 2019. Yzerman had previously served as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he was credited with turning the organization around. The Red Wings, on the other hand, continued to struggle, and the club failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the next two seasons, both of which were cut short by the COVID-19 epidemic.
