Diana Krall Biography and Career:
Diana Krall, a jazz singer, and pianist from Canada, was born on November 16, 1964, in the city of Nanaimo. Her sensual, natural contralto voice and gorgeous piano playing have helped her achieve crossover popularity.
Krall began her musical education at a young age, influenced by her father’s record collection of jazz greats like Fats Waller and others as well as her participation in church choirs, where she picked up the piano and learned to sing by ear. She began her career as a professional pianist at the age of 15, at which time she attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and studied privately with jazz pianist Jimmy Rowles. She perfected her set list in the United States and Canada, where her audiences were more discerning. She used a cool jazz rhythm section that featured her own piano, and occasionally she would add inconspicuous string-orchestra backgrounds.
Turn Up the Quiet, her most recent album, finds her returning to form (2017). In 2018, Krall and Tony Bennett released an album titled Love Is Here to Stay, which featured covers of songs by Gershwin. She quietly pays tribute to her late longtime producer Tommy LiPuma in the song This Dream of You (2020).
Whitney Houston is the daughter of vocalist Emily (“Cissy”) Houston, whose group, the Sweet Inspirations, sang backing for Aretha Franklin. Whitney and Dionne Warwick are cousins. Houston virtually retired for the next four years, emerging only to release a poor Christmas album.
In February 2009, she began her comeback with a four-song set at Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy Awards celebration. Due to the overwhelming success of the concert, Houston announced in May that a brand new album will be released in June of that year. I Look to You, released in August to mostly positive reviews, has songs like the bouncy “Million Dollar Bill” (written by Alicia Keys) and the title track, a slowly-building ballad composed by R. Kelly.
Days before Davis’s 2012 Grammys party, singer Whitney Houston was killed in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub in February. An autopsy report released in March indicated that the death was the result of accidental drowning; heart disease and cocaine use were cited as contributing factors. Despite her untimely demise, Houston’s contributions to the musical film Sparkle (2012) continued. Her entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is scheduled for the year 2020.
