Dick Cavett Biography and Career:

Dick Cavett was born Richard Alva Cavett in Gibbon, Nebraska, to Arabel and Alva B. Cavett on November 19, 1936. His parents were both educators. He is of mixed European ancestry. When he was ten years old, his mother died of cancer. Later in life, his father married Dorcas Deland, a teacher herself. In their honour, the ‘Dorcas C. and Alva B. Cavett Elementary School’ was dedicated. He directed a Saturday morning radio show and starred in the play ‘The Winslow Boy’ during his high school years. He was a state gymnastics champion and served as president of his school’s student government.


He also worked as a caddie and performed magic for pocket money at the ‘Lincoln Country Club.’ He was the recipient of the ‘Best New Performer award at the ‘International Brotherhood of Magicians’ convention in St Louis, Missouri. He entered ‘Yale University’ shortly thereafter, where he directed and acted in the university’s theatre plays and participated in the school radio station, ‘WYBC.’

His success in the field inspired him to switch his senior year major from English to theatre. Throughout his undergraduate years, he worked odd jobs and met numerous celebrities in order to gain firsthand knowledge of the entertainment world. He resided in a small Manhattan apartment in the early 1960s and appeared in minor roles as an “extra” on ‘The Phil Silvers Show.’ Additionally, he appeared in a film promoting the ‘US Army Signal Corps.’ He worked as a copyboy for ‘Time,’ when he met Jack Paar, the host of ‘The Tonight Show,’ and charmed him with his funny lines.

He also met and impressed famed comic Stan Laurel of ‘Laurel and Hardy’ fame with his talent. Cavett met Caroline Nye McGeoy as an undergraduate at the ‘Yale School of Drama.’ They collaborated on several theatrical productions in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and married on June 4, 1964. Regrettably, Caroline died in 2006 of lung cancer. He married Martha Rogers in New Orleans in 2010. He is the father of two stepchildren from Martha’s previous marriage. Since his freshman year at ‘Yale University,’ Cavett has struggled with depression. He began receiving treatment from Dr Nathan Kline in 1975 and has steadily progressed since then.

He did, however, require electroconvulsive therapy after breaking out in a cold sweat during a Concorde take-off. On television, his signature song is a trumpet rendition of ‘Glitter and Be Gay,’ which is played as he enters the stage. He was the subject of a 1993 documentary titled ‘A Patient’s Perspective,’ which was created by the ‘Association for Depression and Related Affective Disorders.’ In 1981, on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, he interviewed the pop group ‘ABBA’ in Sweden, and the presentation, named ‘Dick Cavett Meets ABBA,’ was shown throughout Europe by the Swedish television network ‘SVT.

Cavett was hired as the talent coordinator for ‘The Tonight Show’ and met numerous industry luminaries, including Woody Allen and Groucho Marx. He introduced ‘An Evening with Groucho Marx’ at ‘Carnegie Hall’ and also contributed writing to ‘The Tonight Show.’ He began performing stand-up comedy in the mid-1960s at ‘The Bitter End,’ a nightclub in New York City’s Greenwich Village. He has also performed commercial voice-overs and appeared on the popular television show ‘What’s My Line?’ He secured a contract with ‘ABC’ to anchor the show ‘This Morning’ in 1968.

Because the show was deemed too complex for the morning audience, it was moved to prime time and ultimately to late night. After establishing himself in show business, he began presenting his own show, ‘The Dick Cavett Show,’ which aired in various forms on various networks from 1968 until 1996. He is most known for his tenure on ‘ABC’s’ talk show from 1969 to 1974. He established a reputation as the host of “a thinking man’s talk show” and garnered favourable reviews from critics. He frequently addressed divisive issues and engaged people with divergent viewpoints.


In June 1971, he moderated a debate on the Vietnam War between former presidential contender John Kerry and veteran John O’Neil. The argument went against the pro-war side, which enraged President Nixon, who attempted but failed to remove Cavett from office. He has interviewed numerous celebrities, including David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, and clips from his shows have been used in films such as ‘Annie Hall’ (1997) and ‘Apollo 13’. (1995). He has also starred in numerous television series as himself and in a few cameo parts in serials.

Cavett narrated HBO’s ‘Time Wars’ series and also served as narrator of their documentary series ‘Remember When…,’ which examined the evolution of American society across time. Additionally, he has participated in a number of game programmes, including ‘To Tell the Truth’ and ‘The $25,000 Pyramid.’ Among his early works are gags for Jack Paar and Jonny Carson’s ‘Tonight Show.’

From 1968 through 1996, he hosted his own chat programme, ‘The Dick Cavett Show,’ on several stations. He is the co-author of two books: ‘Eye on Cavett’ (1983) and his autobiography, ‘Cavett’ (1974). He has appeared in two Academy Award-nominated films, namely ‘Annie Hall’ (1977) and ‘Forrest Gump’ (1989). (1994). In 2014, he made his Broadway debut in the play ‘Hellman v. McCarthy.’ He has been nominated for ten ‘Emmy’ awards and has won three of them. He was honoured into the ‘Hall of Fame of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association’ in 1991.
