Dion DiMucci Biography and Career:

Dion DiMucci, commonly known simply as Dion, is an Italian-American singer and composer now residing in the United States. He is noted for combining elements of rock, doo-wop, R&B genres, and pure blues into his music, and as a result, he is regarded as one of the most talented rock vocalists from the time before the British Invasion.

DiMucci was raised in an Italian-American household in New York, where his father was a vaudeville performer. During his youth, DiMucci traveled with his father and became interested in country music during these travels.

Additionally, he fell in love with the blues and doo-wop musicians whose performances he heard on the radio and in the taverns of the neighborhood. In the late 1950s, he began his career in the music industry, originally serving as the main singer for Dion and the Belmonts. In 1960, DiMucci embarked on a solo career, during which he produced a number of excellent singles, some of which include “The Wanderer,” “Runaround Sue,” “Lovers Who Wander,” and “Ruby Baby.”

His success extended throughout the late 1960s and into the middle of the 1970s, winning him plaudits from critics who had previously labeled him as little more than a simple adolescent idol. The iconic vocalist was honored with entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the year 1989.

Dion DiMucci was born into an Italian-American family on July 18, 1939, in the Bronx borough of New York City, New York. While traveling with his father, Pasquale, a vaudeville performer, he was exposed to country music at a young age, which sparked his interest in the genre.

At the beginning of 1957, he worked along with Bob and Gene Schwartz of Mohawk Records to create the song “The Chosen Few.” The track featured the group “The Timberlane’s” on the background vocals.

Carlo Mastrangelo, Angelo D’Aleo, and Fred Milano were the other members of the singing quartet known as the Belmonts when Dion DiMucci decided to collaborate with them.

The band finally found success in 1958 with the publication of their song “I Wonder Why,” which debuted at position No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was distributed by the band’s newly established label, Laurie Records. After this, two additional successful songs, “Don’t Pity Me” and “No One Knows,” were released.

The popularity of the songs resulted in DiMucci and his friends being invited to participate in “The Winter Dance Party” tour among other artists such as the Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and Frankie Sardo.

In the beginning of 1959, Dion and the Belmonts released their next single, which was named “A Teenager in Love.” It reached its highest position in the United States at No. 5 and in the United Kingdom at No. 28. Their most successful single, “Where or When,” which was also published in November of that year, climbed all the way up to the third position on the charts in the United States.

After Dion DiMucci and the Belmonts went their separate ways in October 1960, he launched his solo career with the release of the album “Alone with Dion,” which included the hit track “Lonely Teenager.”

After that, the performer worked with the Del-Satins on the album “Runaround Sue,” which finally achieved the rank of the gold disc and peaked at number one on the charts in the United States and number eleven in the United Kingdom.

His subsequent song, “The Wanderer,” peaked at No. 2 in the United States and at No. 10 in the United Kingdom. 1965 saw the inception of the musical collective known as The Wanderers, which included DiMucci, guitarist John Falbo, bassist Pete Baron, and drummer Carlo Mastrangelo.

In 1966 and 1967, he had a short reunion with the Belmonts, during which time they released an album and performed at several local clubs before disbanding for good. After that, DiMucci contacted Laurie Records and in August of 1968, they recorded “Abraham, Martin, and John.” His career was given a second chance because of the popularity of the song.

Following those few years, he produced stuff that was more mature in nature. In 1969, he made the transition to the Warner Brothers label and immediately issued two albums, none of which was very successful.

During the 1980s, the singer released a total of five albums under the DaySpring Records label. These albums, “Only Jesus,” “Inside Job,” “I Put Away My Idols,” “Kingdom in the Streets,” and “Velvet & Steel,” were examples of how he expressed his Christian beliefs via his music.

With the release of the album “Yo Frankie” in 1989, he made his comeback to rock music. The album included Paul Simon, Patty Smyth, Lou Reed, Bryan Adams, and k.d. lang as guest artists. After that, DiMucci became a member of the Little Kings band with Scott Kempner, Frank Funaro, and Mike Mesaros, which did not last long.

In 2006, he released the album titled “The Bronx in Blue,” which was later considered for a Grammy Award nomination. After another year, he came out with the album titled “Son of Skip James.”

DiMucci and Paul Simon collaborated on a song named “New York Is My Home” that was released as a single. In May of 2017, he published his album titled “Kickin’ Child: The Lost Album 1965,” which consisted of tracks that he had recorded for Columbia in 1965.

In the 1960s, Dion DiMucci became a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. In 1962, he was able to compose or co-compose a number of popular songs, some of which were “Little Diane” (which peaked at No. 8), “Lovers Who Wander” (which peaked at No. 3), and “Love Came to Me” (No. 10). Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” included his pop tune “Runaround Sue” as one of the selections. Since 1963, Dion DiMucci has been married to Susan Butterfield. They have two children together.
