Doug McMillon Biography and Career:

American businessman Carl Douglas McMillon, who was born on October 17, 1966, serves as Walmart Inc.’s president and CEO.  He is a director on the board of the retailer. In 2014, after initially working there as a summer associate while still in high school, he was named the fifth CEO of the business.

From 2005 to 2009, he served as the organization’s Sam’s Club division president. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Walmart International president. McMillon was the oldest of three children born to Laura and Morris McMillon, a dentist who served in Vietnam.

He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas. When McMillon was 16 years old, his parents relocated the family to Bentonville, Arkansas, the location of Walmart’s corporate offices. McMillon, a sports aficionado, was the basketball team’s point guard for Bentonville High School.

McMillon started working at Walmart as a summer worker when he was a teen. He unloaded trucks in a distribution center throughout the summer. McMillon attended the University of Arkansas after high school and received his bachelor’s degree there in 1989.

The next year, when McMillon pursued his MBA at the University of Tulsa, he called Walmart and expressed interest in receiving training to work as a buyer after his studies were complete. Shortly after that, McMillon went back to working for Walmart as an assistant manager in a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

McMillon relocated to Walmart’s Bentonville headquarters to join the buyer-training program after earning his MBA in 1991. He was first in charge of purchasing fishing equipment, but eventually expanded into duties as a buyer and merchandiser, working with food, apparel, crafts, and furniture.

Prior to entering an executive position at Walmart, he had previously served as the general merchandise manager for Sam’s Club, a branch of Walmart that operated wholesale stores and handled among other things toys, electronics, and sporting goods.

On August 4, 2005, Walmart appointed McMillon president and CEO of Sam’s Club. McMillon placed a strong emphasis on the wholesaler’s marketing to small business clients. In an effort to compete with Costco, McMillon also added what The Wall Street Journal called “treasure hunt” items, which are limited-edition, pricey premium items, including diamond necklaces and wine vacations, for sale adjacent to affordable bulk commodities.

In February 2009, McMillon was appointed by Walmart executives to oversee the company’s international division in place of Mike Duke, who had been elevated to the position of CEO of Walmart Stores, Inc. Walmart International under McMillon concentrated on strengthening its position in already-established areas like the United States, Canada, China, and the UK.

Integrating Walmart’s “everyday low prices” strategy to these other markets was one area that McMillon considered to be particularly important. Under McMillon, the international division spent US$2.4 billion to buy the bulk of Massmart Holdings Ltd. in South Africa.

Walmart International’s sales growth exceeded Walmart US’s during McMillon’s tenure, increasing to 29 percent of all company-wide sales. The division had more than 3,300 outlets spread over 14 countries when McMillon first took over as its leader.

Walmart International has 6,300 shops in 26 countries when it made the announcement that he will lead Walmart Stores, Inc. in late 2013. On November 25, 2013, Walmart announced that McMillon would become the company’s fifth CEO, replace Mike Duke as CEO starting February 1, 2014, and immediately join the board of directors.

McMillon took over the business at a period when sales were falling and rivals like Costco, Amazon.com, grocery store networks Kroger and Safeway, and discount chains of tiny shops like Family Dollar and Dollar General were becoming more competitive.

In his first two years as CEO, McMillon improved Walmart’s management team, increased the company’s commitment to e-commerce, and increased salaries for hourly workers in the US. Although higher labor costs and Walmart’s digital services reduced short-term profitability, McMillon stated that the changes would result in happier employees and improved customer service as well as a stronger position in a shifting retail market.

Walmart will invest an additional US$2.7 billion, according to McMillon, in greater associate salaries, benefits, and training. The company’s lowest wage will rise to US$9 an hour in 2015 and US$10 an hour in 2016. 40% of the 1.4 million US employees of the corporation were impacted by the move.

A revamped paid time off policy, free basic short-term disability for full-time employees, and raises for the majority of its employees were all announced by McMillon in January 2016. By highlighting the need to create a “seamless shopping experience,” McMillon stated that a long-term objective of Walmart is to enhance investments in e-commerce.

In response, he declared in 2015 that Walmart will spend $1 billion on its internet business. Enhancing the company’s environmental sustainability and reducing waste anywhere it exists are additional objectives. In order to increase energy efficiency, Walmart started rolling out a program in 2014 to replace the lighting in its stores in the US, UK, Latin America, and Asia with LED lights.

Walmart would push for three of its primary objectives, according to McMillon, who spoke at the Davos World Economic Forum in January 2016: supplying the company with renewable energy, eliminating waste, and promoting sustainably packaged items.

On his role as CEO, McMillon aimed to “positively differ” in other matters. McMillon urged Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson to oppose the state’s “religious freedom” measure in a statement he released on March 31, 2015. The legislation, according to McMillon, “threatens to erode the inclusive spirit found across the state of Arkansas and does not reflect the principles we proudly embrace.”

Following the shooting of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, in June 2015, McMillon declared that the business would discontinue selling products with the Confederate flag. Walmart’s gun sales were adjusted by McMillon.

In an interview with CNNMoney, he suggested that Walmart’s assortment of guns be tailored toward sports shooters and hunters. The business stopped selling military-style semiautomatic rifles in August 2015. In 2014, 2015, and 2016, Forbes included McMillon on its list of the world’s most powerful people, where he placed No. 29, No. 32, and No. 27 respectively.

McMillon was named No. 4 on ExecRank’s 2015 list of the best CEOs of significant businesses. McMillon participated in a corporate meeting organized by the then-president-elect Donald Trump in December 2016 to offer strategic and policy recommendations on economic issues.

McMillon criticized President Trump’s response to the violent rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia, in an email to all workers and on the public-accessible internal corporate website in August 2017. The President “lost a key chance to help bring our country together,” according to the statement. McMillon will keep his position on the presidential advisory council for economic development, according to a company representative.

McMillion made the announcement that it would stop selling ammunition for pistols and military-style weapons in September 2019. This policy revision resulted after the August 2019 Walmart shooting in El Paso, Texas, which left multiple people dead.

McMillion’s efforts to start a conversation and take action on the situation established a new standard for how businesses and their executives handle such issues.
