Douglas Ross Biography and Career:
Douglas Gordon Ross (born 27 January 1983) is a British politician who has held the position of Leader of the Scottish Conservative Party since he was elected. Since then, he has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Moray. Besides his position in the House of Commons, he also serves as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Highlands and Islands, having been elected to that position. From through, he served as the region’s Member of Parliament.
Ross was born in Aberdeen and received his education at Forres Academy. After graduating from the Scottish Agricultural College, he went to work on a dairy farm in the Highlands of Scotland. In his childhood, he was a member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, but he later moved to the Scottish Conservatives and started his political career as a researcher for the Scottish Parliament and subsequently as a councilor in the Scottish county of Moray. He tried and failed to win election to the Moray UK Parliament seat in the general elections of and, as well as to the Scottish Parliament constituency in the general elections of and In the latter election, he was elected as a regional list MSP for the Highlands and Islands, making him one of the extra members for the area.
Ross was elected to the House of Commons in the 2015 general election, beating SNP deputy leader Angus Robertson, and was re-elected in with a smaller majority in the subsequent election. He served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland under Prime Minister Boris Johnson for a period of six months in that position. In May, he resigned in protest at Dominic Cummings’ continued appointment as Johnson’s adviser despite the fact that he had broken lockdown guidelines during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Following the departure of Jackson Carlaw in July 2020, Ross launched his candidacy for the position of leader of the Scottish Conservative Party in August of the same year. Five days later, he was unanimously chosen as the party’s leader. He ran on a combined ticket with Ruth Davidson, the former leader of the Scottish Conservatives. Because Davidson served in the House of Commons and was not a member of the Scottish Parliament, he acted as the party’s leader in the Scottish Parliament until the Scottish Parliament election.
Sandy and Lesley Ross welcomed Douglas Gordon Ross into the world on January 27, 1983, in Aberdeen. After attending Alves Primary School and Forres Academy, he went on to study agriculture at the Scottish Agricultural College, which he attended throughout his early years. After graduation, he went to work on a dairy farm in Forres, Moray, where his father had been employed as a cattleman for many years. He was a member of the Scottish Liberal Democrats when he was younger, but he subsequently switched to voting for the Conservatives.
His political career started when he accepted a position as a parliamentary researcher in the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. He was originally elected to the Moray Council as a representative of the Fochabers-Lhanbryde ward and quickly rose through the ranks to become a key member of the Independent/Conservative government. As an elected councilor, he served on the Moray Council for eight years, serving as a member of the ruling administration group before being “outed” from that position following a debate about school closures. He was re-elected to the council in December, and he was re-elected to the Moray Council for eight years.
As the Conservative candidate for Moray in the general elections, Ross finished second behind Angus Robertson, although his share of the vote grew by 5.0 percentage points in the next election: He also ran as the Conservative candidate for the Moray Scottish Parliament seat in the recent Scottish Parliament election, where he came in second against Richard Lochhead, who was also a Conservative. When it came time to vote for the Scottish Parliament, Ross improved his vote by 18.0 percent, although he ended behind Lochhead once again. His election to the Scottish Parliament, however, came as a result of his being ranked first on the regional list for the Highlands and Islands. In the EU membership referendum, he voted in favor of the United Kingdom staying in the European Union.
Ross ran for the seat of Moray in the last general election, this time against SNP deputy leader Angus Robertson, who he defeated. Using 22,637 votes, or 47.6 percent of the total votes cast, he was successful in reversing Robertson’s 9,065-vote advantage, giving the Conservatives a 16.5-percent swing in the election. Ross resigned from his position as a member of the Scottish Parliament after being elected to the House of Commons.
The former Conservative Party leader claimed in an interview that if he had the opportunity to be Prime Minister for one day “without any negative consequences,” he would “want to see harsher enforcement against Gypsy Travellers.” His comment was criticized by a number of people, including Naomi McAuliffe, the executive director of Amnesty International. Ross expressed regret for his use of words. The Scottish Football Association began a disciplinary inquiry over his comments, which resulted in no formal disciplinary action being taken against him, but did issue a warning to him to be more careful with his words in the future.
