Edvard Moser Biography and Career:

Edvard Moser is best recognized for his work in several areas. The study conducted by Edvard Moser had significant repercussions for the scientific community’s comprehension of spatial representation in the mammalian brain. It also provided new knowledge of spatial deficiencies caused by neurological diseases and the neural processes involved in memory and thought.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2014 for his contributions to understanding the neuronal system in the brain responsible for spatial representation. Along with his wife, the Norwegian neuroscientist May-Britt Moser, and the British-American neuroscientist John O’Keefe, he was awarded the prize jointly with both of them. The Mosers became the sixth married couple ever to share a Nobel Prize.

Edvard Moser spent his childhood on the westernmost part of Norway’s coastline region. In the early 1980s, he attended the University of Oslo to pursue studies in mathematics, statistics, and computer programming. In 1985, he wed May-Britt, also attending the University of Oslo. After receiving their bachelor’s degrees in psychology and neurobiology in 1990, the pair continued their studies at the University of Oslo and became graduate students.

They did their investigation under the direction of the Norwegian researcher Per Oskar Andersen. Understanding the function that neuronal activity in a part of the brain known as the dentate gyrus plays in the process of spatial learning was the primary focus of Edvard’s study for his thesis. In 1995, he received his Ph.D. in neurophysiology from the university.

After working briefly as a postdoctoral researcher with British neuroscientist Richard Morris at the University of Edinburgh and with O’Keefe at University College London, Edvard began his position as a professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) the following year. Additionally, May-Britt has decided to take a post there. After some time, the Mosers became full professors at NTNU.

In 1985, when both of them were still in school, Edvard Moser wed his wife, May-Britt Moser. They announced in 2016 that they would be getting a divorce. His sister, Ingunn Moser, is a sociologist and is most recognized for her role as the founding rector of VID University. Edvard and May-Britt collaborated on a project to determine which neural networks in the region of the brain known as the hippocampus were responsible for both the ability to locate oneself in space and to remember previous locations.

In 1971, O’Keefe and his student Jonathan O. Dostrovsky discovered that the hippocampus included something referred to as “place cells,” which were essential to the process of cortical (spatial) mapping. Their research brought attention, in particular, to cells located in a region of the hippocampus formation known as CA1.

The Mosers wanted to know whether the activity of place cells in CA1 originated in the hippocampus or some other brain area, so they set out to investigate this question. As a result of these results, the researchers decided to look into an area known as the entorhinal cortex, which was related to neurons in CA1.

Through the use of electrodes that were strategically placed inside the dorsocaudal medial entorhinal cortex of the rat brain, the Mosers were able to record the activity of cells that were located in that particular location. It was discovered that the movement of the cells in the dMEC was connected to the rat’s site inside its cage. This discovery is similar to the one O’Keefe made with place cells.

On the other hand, in contrast to the activity seen in the hippocampus, the movement of data cells was astonishingly regular. Electrode activity regularly surged when rats were allowed to run freely in their cages. The spikes were uniformly distributed over the surroundings and had comparable magnitude and direction. The discovery, via mathematical analysis, that the regular action generated a grid of equilateral, tessellating triangles gave rise to the term “grid cell.”

Later, Edvard and May-Britt found more cells in the data involved in spatial representation. These cells are referred to as head direction cells and border cells. It was found that head direction cells sent signals when an animal positioned its head in a specific direction. It was found that border cells transmitted information concerning the borders and limits of an environment.

Both of these types of cells are located in the brain. Further study led to the discovery of relationships between grid cells, head direction cells, border cells, and place cells, with the aggregate activity of the cells giving information about orientation and navigation. One researcher compared the function of the spatial brain system to that of a GPS.

Both of these institutes were established in 2013. He was awarded several other prominent prizes besides the Nobel Prize, including the 2013 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize for Biology or Biochemistry, which he shared with May-Britt and O’Keefe.

Since 2004, Edvard Moser has been a member of the board of reviewing editors for the journal Science. Since 2005, he has been reviewing editor for the journal Journal of Neuroscience. In 2006, the European Neuroscience gathering, known as the FENS Forum, had Edvard Moser as the programming committee’s chairman.
