Efren Reyes Biography and Career:

Efren “Bata” Reyes, dubbed “The Magician,” was born in Pampanga, Philippines, on August 26, 1954.
Efren started working in his uncle’s pool parlor in Manila at the tender age of five.
He was even known to sleep on the table at times, so he could immediately begin playing when he awoke. He picked up abilities from both excellent and terrible players and taught himself how to make even the most difficult shots.

These abilities have been honed and have earned him his moniker owing to the magic he performs on the table against the odds. He has won the World Cup, the International 9-Ball Tournament, and the World 9-Ball Open; he has captained his team to success in the World Team Billiards, and he has won gold medals in the Asian and Southeast Asian Games.

Efren won the Pro-Tour Championship and the PBT World 8-Ball Championship in 1995, the ESPN Ultimate Challenge and the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in 1999, Masters 9-Ball in 2001, and the Challenge of the Champions in 2002. Efren was recognized in the BCA Hall of Fame in 2003 and continues to be the pool’s most devastating weapon.

Reyes began gambling at an early age and in the 1960s and 1970s played three-cushion billiards. He was noticed by promoters after establishing himself as a winner. This enabled him to play in major competitions.

In 1978, with Jose Parica, Rodolfo Luat, Jorge Dacer, and Manuel Flores, Reyes represented Team Philippines in the RP-Japan Pocket Billiards Tournament.

In 1983, Reyes faced Pepito Dacer in the finals of the rotating Philippine Professional Pocket Billiards Championships. The finals were held in a race-to-39 format, and competitors were required to play 11 racks on a weekly basis. Reyes beat Dacer 39-32 in the seventh week of play.

During the 1980s, when Reyes was regarded as a premier player in his own country but was not yet globally recognized, he traveled to the United States to hustle. According to popular belief, Reyes made $80,000 in a single week, establishing him as a folk hero in his hometown.

Reyes started winning events in the United States, Europe, and portions of Asia, receiving international notice and reputation. Throughout his career, he utilized aliases to conceal his identity in order to participate. By the mid-1990s, he had established himself as one of the country’s finest players, alongside Jose Parica and Francisco Bustamante.

Reyes rose to prominence with his victory in the 1994 US Open Nine Ball Championship, beating Nick Varner in the finals. He was the event’s first non-American winner.

Two years later, Efren Reyes and Earl Strickland were picked to square off in an event dubbed the Color of Money. The tournament consisted of a three-day race-to-120 9-ball challenge match. It was hosted in Hong Kong and included a $100,000 winner-take-all prize. 120-117, Reyes won the match. The match exemplified Reyes’ drive to win, as he overcame a 17-game deficit in the closing three hours of the contest. This was the highest prize pool ever won in a pool tournament.

Reyes won the first televised WPA World Nine-ball Championship in 1999. And, although the WPA did not recognize this competition at the time, Reyes would later be recognized as the winner of one of the year’s two world championships, with Nick Varner taking the “real” world title. The next year, the two events were combined, with both men credited as champions. The World Professional Pool Championship was the name given to the Matchroom Sport-organized tournament in Cardiff, Wales, at the time (despite the entry of many non-professional players).

Reyes dominated the tournament, defeating Niels Feijen 15-7 in the finals to claim the $20 million ($170,000) first prize. This was the largest first prize in a pool event at the time.

In 2002, he won the $50,000 winner-take-all International Challenge of Champions, beating Mika Immonen in a deciding rack after a split set between the two players.

Reyes defeated Marlon Manalo to win the first-ever WPA World Eight Ball Champion at the end of 2004. He became the first player in WPA history to win world titles in two distinct disciplines with the victory.

Reyes won the IPT King of the Hill 8-Ball Shootout in December 2005. Reyes took home a record-breaking $200K for first place, defeating fellow Hall of Famer Mike “the Mouth” Sigel by a score of two sets to none (8-0 and 8-5).
