Elizabeth Holmes Biography and Career:
Elizabeth Holmes, an American entrepreneur who was the founder and CEO of the medical diagnostic business Theranos Inc. from 2003 until 2018, was born on February 3, 1984, in Washington, District of Columbia. She was given the title of the world’s youngest self-made woman billionaire in 2014, but by June of 2016, estimations of her net worth had dropped drastically due to severe doubts over the business operations of Theranos and her 50% interest in the firm. In 2018, Holmes was coerced into giving up management of Theranos, and in 2022, she was found guilty of cheating investors after being indicted for the crime.
Holmes, who is the daughter of a U.S. government assistance worker and a congressional committee staffer, spent some time in China when she was still in high school. Holmes grew up in Houston, Texas, and Washington, District of Columbia. During her time there, she launched a firm that sells computer software to academic institutions around Asia. Following her return to the United States, Holmes attended Stanford University in order to get a degree in both electrical and chemical engineering. While Holmes was taking a vacation from her studies at Stanford for the summer, she found employment at the Genome Institute of Singapore.
There, she worked on a computer chip that was intended to identify the presence of the SARS virus in the body of a person. After that, she had an interest in creating medical gadgets that were more effective and could improve upon established methods of diagnostic testing and treatment evaluation. After arriving back at Stanford, Holmes developed and patented a device that, when linked to a person’s body, determined the efficacy of a certain drug by contrasting the parameters of chemical markers generated by a diseased area with those of the therapeutic agent.
She dropped out of Stanford University in the middle of her sophomore year to start Theranos, a business that is focused on producing laboratory testing services that are minimally intrusive. She served as the firm’s founder in 2003 and subsequently became the company’s CEO. Theranos introduced its initial product in 2014, which was a laboratory testing method that claimed to be able to perform more than 1,000 medical tests on a person after collecting just a few drops of blood. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize the process of gathering medical data.
Theranos said that it was enhancing blood collection and testing in laboratories by miniaturizing and automating the procedure. The traditional method for testing blood consisted of withdrawing 5–10 ml (0.17–0.34 fluid ounces) of blood with a big needle in order to fill one tube for each test that a physician required. Experts were concerned that the treatment had discouraged patients who were young, old, or had a real phobia of needles from having their blood testing done in a timely way. The method was often uncomfortable for patients and expensive for insurance companies.
The results of laboratory tests were one of the most important pieces of information that doctors utilized to guide patients toward making educated choices about their medical treatment. The process that is used by Theranos, on the other hand, asserted that a much smaller sample (a few drops taken from a pinprick of a finger) was sufficient to provide the raw material for the company’s diagnostic tests. Additionally, the procedure was shown to be significantly less painful and expensive than conventional testing methods. From 2003 until 2014, Holmes was able to expand Theranos by getting funds from investors, creating infrastructure, and secretly improving the company’s unique procedures.
In 2013, Walgreen Company, which at the time had more than 8,000 drugstores throughout the United States, made the announcement that it had formed a partnership with Theranos to build wellness centers inside its existing Walgreens pharmacies. By 2014, Theranos had already performed more than 200 diagnostic tests, had been granted permission to conduct business in nearly all of the 50 states in the United States, and held a certification from the federal agency responsible for monitoring medical laboratories, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Late in 2015, Theranos’s proprietary technologies and its primary medical testing device, the Edison, became the subject of controversy after a series of articles were published by reporters from The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and other outlets arguing that Theranos had exaggerated Edison’s competence. The reporters argued that Theranos had exaggerated Edison’s competence by noting that the medical device was being used for only a fraction of the company’s tests, despite claims to Other questions concerning the company and its secretive processes soon surfaced.
These questions ranged from Theranos’ decision to release aggregate testing data to the United States Food and Drug Administration (rather than primary testing data), to compliance problems with the company’s laboratory in Newark, California. Additionally, Theranos was under investigation due to the significant delays it had in providing federal authorities with full access to its medical equipment and in submitting its gadgets and technology for scientific peer review. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) informed Theranos in July 2016 that the company had failed to provide adequate documentation showing that it had corrected its previous errors and complied with federal regulations.
As a result, CMS barred Theranos from receiving reimbursements from Medicare and Medicaid, and it prohibited Holmes from owning or operating a medical laboratory for a period of two years. In March of 2018, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed charges against Holmes and Theranos’s former president, Ramesh (“Sunny”) Balwani, accusing them of defrauding investors out of more than $700.0 million while simultaneously touting a product that did not exist.
